Cam Newton: "They gave up on me"

All these Cam worshipers think about is race.  Everything has to do with race.  If you do not love him as much as they do it can only be because of his skin color.  I've never seen so much bigotry being leveled at people just because you don't worship their God.

God?! Lol

Come on now; the love for Cam is no different than ya grandpa being a huge Tom Landry or Carl Y fan. It’s no different than folks who were big Gretzky, MJ, Chipper Jones, Dale Murphy, etc fans.

Biggest thing now is with social media and other media outlets, you’re able to express that with how you see fit.

He's not a Panther anymore, I couldn't care less about how he performs for another team.  As a matter of fact, I hope he under performs for another team and makes the competition level lower in the NFL, why? Because i'm a Panthers fan first...I rooted for him and hoped he was able to come back healthy while he was a Panther, but he's gone now and it's time to move on people, and hope Bridgewater is 1000x better than Cam.  Some of you are foolish for hoping Cam makes the Panthers look foolish.

If you read Bridgewater's answers from his "virtual" presser, it's clear that when the Panthers were negotiating with him, they were talking as if he'd be their starter.

So again, pretty obvious that the plan was to move on from Newton this offseason regardless of whether he was deemed healthy or not.

Nothing wrong with that.  Where it goes wrong is when you start labeling people who don't feel the same way as you do.  Not directed at you but in a general sense.

They are painting with the same broad brush as the people who hate him because of his race. Yet they don't realize that. Some people actually do dislike him for other reasons than being bigots.

But the point is most people aren't considering race at all. I find it ridiculous that is a primary concern here. We are talking about he can't stay healthy which has nothing to do with race

I'm still not 100% convinced this was about health alone. Was it a contributing factor? Of course. Was it the biggest variable? I really doubt it. $20M to allow your proven franchise QB an opportunity to get healthy is nothing. The draft picks garnered from a healthy Newton would be worth a lot more than $20M. But, let's just act like this was a business as usual decision. They don't like something about Cam and wanted to move on. Period.

So do we honestly think that in 2020 a player can't return from a lisfranc and shoulder soreness - after sitting for nearly a calendar year? Particularly someone that lives in the weight room anyway? We've actually had discussions on this board about Cam needing to lay off the weights. Something about flexibility and too much strength in his throws, or something like that.

Honestly, if I were looking at any other team moving on from a guy who hadn't been able to stay healthy for two years, I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Now with that said, is there more to it? Don't know. It's possible.

I would agree that there's a sense Newton was never Tepper's guy. Why? Health might be the primary thing, but if there's more than that you'd have to ask Tepper.

I wouldn't bet that we'll ever know.

See that's the thing.  I like Cam, always have.  Followed him when he was at Auburn and prayed that The Panthers would draft him.  But I have learned that I don't dare critique his game because all the does is bring out racist's on both sides of the spectrum.  Certain players are off limits when it comes to critiquing their play.  That's just how it is.  Everyone is fair game unless it's a player that is worshipped like a God by their fans.

But has it really been 2 years? Some would say he was an MVP candidate through the first half of the 2018 season, and then TJ knocked that idea right on out.

With that in mind, if you could just get him at that level for the first half of the 2020 season, what would his trade value be then?

I like Cam Newton - only because he was the Panthers QB. If I were a 49er fan, I'd probably think of him the same way that most others do. My biggest issue is giving up on real possible assets. If you don't like him because he doesn't fit what you're trying to do moving forward, then I'm fine with that. But to just release him was not wise. You got nothing for a potential franchise QB. The opportunity to let him play one more season is worth a lot more than the cap hit, or a chance for Teddy Bridgewater.

That's where the team disagrees.

The Panthers - and that includes Rhule, Brady, Jake Peetz and everybody - collectively chose Teddy Bridgewater over Cam Newton. There's really no way to dispute that. You can argue that was a bad decision, but you can't argue that was the decision.

Most of the people talking about the decision are only talking about Tepper, but I'm not so sure they ought to be.

Seriously, do people think that Joe Brady hated this decision and fought tooth-and-nail to keep a quarterback he's never worked with over one he knew well who also knew his system?

Maybe they didn't think he was worth 30+ million a year even if healthy.

I agree that Teddy is the safer choice between the two right now.

But sounds like we agree that they would take Teddy over a healthy Cam too. I don't think Cam was a part of their plans for whatever reason - not just he's not healthy. I hope this isn't a precursor of another uber conservative regime.

But I understand. Cam isn't for everyone and could see him rubbing a lot of guys the wrongway. I still hate that we let a former league MVP franchise QB walk out the door for nothing.
