Cam Newton: "They gave up on me"

Based on what? You know for a fact he would have been happy to play on a one year deal?

I don't buy it, top players don't expect to play on one year deals.  They find it insulting.  If Wilson got hurt the year before his last year of a deal, would he play on a one year deal?  Rodgers? No, they would still expect to get extended.

When did this willingness happen?  After Cam looked at the trade market?  This sis something that just happened the past few months, I'm sure they have talks about an extension for a year or so.

Didn't somebody report that Hurney and RR wanted to extend him last year but Tepper vetoed it?  So was Cam willing to play on a one year deal a back then?  Its kind of late to decide now, by then the team has decided to go in a different direction.

Based on his own words and the words of people who know.

Remember when Newton said they'd have to force him out?

Remember when he later on said they did force him out?

There was a time when Newton was pushing for an extension, but when it became clear the Panthers weren't going to give him one he opted instead to play out the last year of his deal. The team let him believe they were okay with that.

They weren't. Hence, why Newton said he felt blindsided and had to be consoled.

Now Newton is giving his side of the story and the team is giving theirs. Up to you who you find more credible, but the ultimate result is the same and for me, actions speak louder than words.

Newton was ready to play out this last year, even if the ultimate reason was that he had no other choice.

Despite this, the team signed a replacement for him and cut him anyway. And it's pretty clear this was the plan all along.

Was it the right decision? I guess we'll find out.

I am not really impressed with Tepper and his handling of the team on the football side. Not at all confident that he made the right coaching hire. Not really crazy about throwing it all out and moving to straight moneyball football style. Sure, I could be wrong. Hope so. Still...

I think whatever you think of Cam, look at it from the perspective that you bought the team and there were good expectations for success with the way the team was structured and there was still a window but your team has sucked the first two years while you pay a QB to sit, and watch the team circle the drain when he doesn't play.

Do you really want a third year of that? Or in the second year of it, when you see the stuff that happened with that QB in the offseason, camp, the first two games, do you probably say to yourself "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me"? Probably say there won't be a third time, and look at that player still not healthy when you have to start getting your team together? And the guy wants more years? Not willing to prove it?

I don't know if the player's attitude on his contract even matters to me, if I have lost two years and am still counting on that player. I'd just think it was time to jump. Remember, no emotional attachment, no history, except two lost seasons.

I would really question the fitness of ownership if they just stood pat on that situation.

I wonder if Cam wants to pay back the 40 million he received over the past 2 years. Sure he is angry at the team but how long are they supposed to hang on handing him 20 million plus per year to not play. Honestly I hope he recovers but am not angry the Panthers moved on. This is the way it goes in the NFL.

Why is money the first thing someone always brings up in situation like these with athletes, like money just voids your ability to have emotions or strong opinions on how something was handled ? Can someone please enlighten me? This is really a concerning opinion most share on professional athletes.

So just because he made millions, in which he earned, he should just shut up and take any kind of treatment from the Fo of the organization?
Y’all can’t be serious today

Two things would be nice to happen before next week. One would be the coronavirus would disappear, and the other would be that we can all stop talking about Cam.  Neither will happen but I can wish.

Did you act this way when Luke retired?

The Luke talk went on for weeks. But the Cam talks should end immediately.lol

Honest question. If this is true, how are we signing all these free agents? Without "proper physicals?"

The difference is they aren't coming off IR and surgeries. So the physical is not as important to the decision.

Well, Teddy had a pretty intense history. I can't remember, did we sign him before the NFL moratorium?

The contract can easily be written to protect the team from any negative surprises that may arise when the team is able to get Cam in to see their doctors.
