Cam Newton: "They gave up on me"

NAS

Recommended Posts

Every year, one or more starting QBs go down, often before the season ever starts.  Assuming he is physically ready and able, that may be Cam's best shot at being in a starting lineup for week one.

For him, I just hope it is on a team in a position to win, and not Stafford in Detroit, whoever is in Cincinnati these days, or some other place that has to have him wondering why he keeps doing this.  He was always at his best when he was having fun out there, and I do not associate those places with fun (nor was our offensive backfield the last few years).

If that were true, they wouldn't have cut him and signed someone else.

They signed someone else and then cut him.

If they hadn't signed TB, they might not have released Cam already.

People need to stop trying to connect the dots based on what the parties involved are saying.  Everyone has their own version of the story but the truth is usually somewhere in the middle.

Here is what usually happens in these situations, and my best guess is what happened here.

Cam wanted an extension, team said no.

Cam probably wasn't happy about it, so team said look for a trade.

In the meantime no trade materialized, opportunity to sign TB presented itself.  Once TB signed there was no way there were going to carry two $20m QBs.

My best guess is if Cam would have been more open to playing on basically a one year deal, they might have been less inclined to sign TB.

Even if you don't think Cam fits your system, if he shows he is relatively healthy next year you get at least a 3rd round comp pick for him the following year.  In reality you probably can tag him and trade him for a 1st or 2nd.

When its all said and done Cam will probably end up playing for less money this year then if he would have stayed, and the Panthers will also get less compensation.

Unfortunately in these situations, players overvalue themselves and they don't realize it until the market tells them so.

People keep saying that they were going to get rid of Cam regardless so they could tank, that doesn't make since since they signed TB.  Releasing Cam actually cost you assets.  You lose atleast a 3rd you would get for him next year, and you also lose out on a 3rd (comp for Bradberry) you could got by not signing TB.

My best guess is they got rid of Cam because they didn't want give him a long term deal, and he didn't want to play on a one year deal.

The decision to move on from Newton was made well before they signed Bridgewater. They wouldn't even have pursued Bridgewater otherwise.

I'd consider both parties positions reasonable in this scenario.

The interests of Cam and the Panthers no longer aligned and led to a parting of the ways.

Happens all the time in sports and life in general.

There isn't a bad guy here, just people looking out for their own best interests.

This recent media narrative about how the team should have cut him weeks a go is pure BS. They were trying to get a trade partner and that should be obvious.  When nobody wanted to trade for him it was the only option. It sucks but you can't wish in to existence a trading partner.

But why was that decision made?

Basic answer: They didn't believe he was worth it.

Beyond that, you'd have to ask the team but based on what we've read, the most likely answer seems to be they didn't believe he could stay healthy.

I personally hope he goes the way Luke did.  Just retire! Be fairly healthy and love his women and kids and enjoy the money the bodily sacrifice brought him. Cam has plenty of money and endorsements and business. A man with that much sauce doesn't play second fiddle, and has no need to.

I'll never forget Cam having 3 touchdowns in the first half during a home game, having an incompletion and being "heckled" as being a poor thrower... no surprise ya'll are taking offense to a motivational video.  Where is all of your negative energy going to focus once he's completely off your radar?

To a point...

Newton had expressed willingness to play out the end of his deal. It obviously wasn't his preferred choice, but he was willing to do it.

The Panthers weren't.

Based on what? You know for a fact he would have been happy to play on a one year deal?

I don't buy it, top players don't expect to play on one year deals.  They find it insulting.  If Wilson got hurt the year before his last year of a deal, would he play on a one year deal?  Rodgers? No, they would still expect to get extended.

When did this willingness happen?  After Cam looked at the trade market?  This sis something that just happened the past few months, I'm sure they have talks about an extension for a year or so.

Didn't somebody report that Hurney and RR wanted to extend him last year but Tepper vetoed it?  So was Cam willing to play on a one year deal a back then?  Its kind of late to decide now, by then the team has decided to go in a different direction.
