Panthers will draft Justin Herbert

Am I the only one who's not impressed with this guy? Not only from a skill standpoint, but he just doesn't have that leadership type personality. Guy has bust written all over him. DL or OL needs to be our main focus in the 1st round. Because it won't matter who are QB is, if they can't protect him, he will fail. Can't make the same mistake we made with Cam. Protect your QB.

It would be stupid on Teddy's part to sign here knowing the same offseason they were drafting his replacement... He had to have some insurance that he would be giving a chance to be the future here before they look for another QB...

Good point.  If Teddy shows he is a starting QB year one then they wouldn’t draft a QB.  That’s a big IF right now.  But I wish him luck.

I don't think the TB signing causes us not to go after a young QB.  I can see the thinking now, TB allows us to try and win now and also would be a good QB to help groom a young guy.  Also prevents the young guy from having to play as a rookie.

Personally I hope we chase a young QB next year, not his.  Burrow and Tua would both cost way too many resources to get, and I'm not sold on Love and/or Herbert.  Maybe with a trade down, but overall I would prefer just to wait until next year.

Also what happens if TB fits this system perfectly and flourishes, maybe you extend him, at that point you have a wasted a top pick this year on a QB.  Waiting a year just makes sense, you will have a good idea of what TD can do, he is on a three year deal.  You can cut him after two and that still gives the rookie a year to sit.

The irony to all of this is if Cam ends up with the Chargers that increases the chances Herbert is there for us to pick....

Okay.. By your logic wouldn't Cam be able to do that.. Or maybe a cheaper FA QB like Dalton, McCown or Hoyer?? Guys who have actually done that.. TB has never been a young QB groomer.. He's been to busy trying to prove he is a NFL quality QB himself...  It just seem stupid.. To do it this way.. If you wanted a QB groomer who could start for a year.. There is alot of Rodney Peete's out there..

I'm not a big Herbert fan.  I watched several Oregon games this year, and was not impressed by him at all.  He does not handle pressure well, tends to panic a bit when his 1st read is not there, and is not much of a leader.

With that said, he has all the physical talent in the world...probably the best pure talent in this class.  Oregon's offense was crap, and did him no favors.  I also don't think he was coached up as much as he should have been, which contributed to him not growing much as a QB over his time at Oregon.

So, if we do take him, I will trust that the powers that be saw enough in his tape and interviews to believe that his issues are fixable.  After all, they are much more adept at understanding the nuances that effect a QB's play than I'll ever be.  And we really are set up to give a QB a chance to develop for a year...which Herbert would absolutely need.

And for anyone interested in actually watching him for yourself, ESPNU will be playing a handful of Oregon's games on Monday, April 6th.

In fact, If you search, there are actually a bunch of 2019 college football games that will be shown on different channels.  So, there is a very good chance you can re-watch a game with a top prospect you are interested in.

I didn't say it was good logic, or my logic, I said I could seem thinking that way.

First of all TB has some familiarity with the offense that will be run, so that is somewhat different from guys like Dalton or even Cam so I can see some of their logic.

It's not logic at All its retarded... You can pay way less for a Hoyer, McCown or Dalton (who are all older vets who could have just as well pick up Brady's system) and been place holders and QB groomers...

I don't see the logic in paying that much for a 1 year rental..

Mariota is making way less and was a higher draft pick with better numbers..

Based on the structure of his contract, probably a 2 or 3 year rental.

I get your logic, but I'm thinking they think higher of Bridgewater than those other guys you mentioned.

Also a players draft position is irrelevant when they are free agents, not to mention I'm not sure what metric you are using to say Mariota has better numbers?

PFF score?  Yards? QBR?

Yes his contract way better structure for him to have a prove it season.. And if he fails you're in position to get a QB in the better QB draft next year...

This is why it's logical that they have a higher opinion of him so they are giving him a chance and not drafting his replacement this year..

It's also logical why he signed here when he did have other suitors.. He knows that this is a opportunity to actually get a starting job if he succeeds.. I also think he has been giving assurances of this or he wouldn't have signed here if he knew he was just going to be a place holder from the start..

Last these metrics..

Mariota's #

Teddy's #

Who has the better numbers in your opinion??

Not sure drafting Herbert or any other QB in round 1 makes sense now that we’ve officially signed Bridgewater and Walker. The other unknown is if Herbert even fits this new offensive scheme we’re running. It’s one of the factors in Cam’s departure and it would be senseless to bring in a QB with similar challenges that is not an ideal fit IMO.

Everyone loves to slam Hurney on his track record when it comes to his gaffes, but he isn’t afforded the same courtesy when it comes to what he has proven year after year after year that he actually excels at. So I’m gonna trust him on his first round selection until he gives me reason not to.
