I HAD To Make A Thread On This In Comparison To 05 Defense, I'm Sorry

They will try to address the DT problem ASAP. That means either through new strategies (lol, push him more to the right!) or through a new player.

At least one position is going to be weak, if not more, especially as the season goes on. You will always have bad luck at some point.

Your best players are starters; which means when the starter goes out, the one behind him won't be able to "fill" (cheap reference to DT) the spot perfectly.

In week 1 we were thin at DT? We had 5, and all are solid. Yeah, now we are thin, seeing all of them are banged up, but you can't blame that on coaching or personnel failure, that's just bad luck.

When did I state it was the end of the world? My post was sarcastic, and the part about getting dominated by their OL is true. Do I think we're screwed now? Of course not, I've had a feeling about this team since TC that they could go far, and no one should be calling it quits now.

Ok- evidently you DONT UNDERSTAND.

Its like having Steve Smith, Drew Carter, Kery Colbert and 2 practice squad players at WR-

Even though you have FIVE players- YOUR THIN AT TALENT.

We have been thin at DT with quality players all season. We have TWO GREAT DT's, after that the results are what you seen last Sun night.

Thats the POINT man.

I dont think anyone is calling it quits. Its just they could have prevented this problem in the offseason. Thats all.

I am sure they wont let it happen again.

You're overreacting quite a bit here buddy. First of all, our back-up DT's aren't practice squad quality, the best OL in the league will make them look like that though. If you're gonna tell me Gary Gibson and Darwin Walker are practice squad quality guys, then this isn't worth it. Also, our DT problem has been here since pre-season, so it's quite dumb to bitch about it now. Every team has flaws, and I don't really see it killing us, seeing they'll be healthy int he post-season.

You make a very good point (well, I made it earlier I think but nevermind); people are trying to make this team perfect when it's impossible. There are going to be positions that are weak no matter what you do.

I'm not over-reacting. I'm just sayin the problem has been there all year. We just got hit at the wrong time last week. I said in the post before we will be fine.

And I understand NO team will be perfect. (other than the 72 dolphins, 07 pats, 90's skins, or any other teams who won back to back Superbowls. - thats perfect enough in my mind)

All I am sayin is that it was a risk the FO was willing to take in the pre-season. We will have to live with the outcome.

Thats all......

The bad thing is that we don't have another 350 plus DT to plug in if Kemo goes out. Sure we gain speed with being a little smaller up front, but we still got gashed right up the middle.

Don't get man-handled? Play off the offensive lineman? Play a linebacker for the run only and/or cross pass plays?

They have been getting run on pretty well for weeks even with Kemo in there. Had anyone heard of that Smith dude on Det before the Carolina game? I am sure it affected them, but lack of depth affected them more, IMO.

I agree with you. Depth is an issue for sure. But I think it is exacerbated by poor player execution. Kemo was sorely missed and the replacements didn't step up to the challenge. Guys who have come in on rotation haven't played poorly but also haven't consistently performed that well either, week in and week out. They have their games but overall they are a drop-off from the starters. Seems that players make poor decisions and have "poor run fits" (all the rage to discuss) if you watch the film they say. I saw players being knocked off the ball.

Or they find themselves going in for the sack like Johnson last week and then wiff on the quarterback who makes a big play downfield. We have to finish plays and we are not doing it enough with the starters let alone the backups.

We just don't seem to have enough players making plays when they have to. Dictating the game. Trgo just doesn't play aggressively. Annoys me to no end!!

Prevent D is what I've heard. Prevent big yard plays. Playing off to me is just giving receivers short yardage, which keeps drives going. Playing man to man/press coverage gives receivers what they earn. They have to fight their way to gain yards by going through you. There should be times we play off, then it should be times we dont. We play off all the time

Best example of when not to play off.

The season before last season in college football:

Virginia Tech vs Boston College, 14-10 BC. Hokies are leading the whole game and then with 4:30 left Matt Ryan takes the ball down the field for a drive against a Hokie defense going all out prevent. With around 2 minutes left they get the onside kick and on 3rd and 30 Matt Ryan throws a TD to cap off another drive against all out prevent defense.

That game taught me two things. Crying is manly, especially when it's for a team you love. And prevent defense sucks ass.

Playing prevent=playing to not lose=loosing

I asked Mega a few weeks who was our DC in 05. He said Mike. I had to make sure cause watching some footage, I dont see what happened

I'm one of those who been going off on Ken Lucas this year. But I just realized that him and Gamble are physical corners. They like to bump and run. But I dont know where this loose zone coverage is coming from this year. So I had check

Watch the first play they show. Freeze it at :07... do you see that? How about 1:47

We played off on those skinny small receivers yesterday like they was Randy Moss or something. A few 3rd conversions came from playing off

05 Giants game http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d8007f4f7

Look at 1:24

Far as blitzing goes, I mean Ravens Eagles blitz. We dont see that

That's the difference in this year defense. Some people call it a conservative defense. But if we go back to 05, I guarantee you wont see many rambling about the defense. Same year Gamble had 7 int, and Lucas had like 8 including playoffs. You also might not notice Gamble & Lucas switched sometimes throughout the season. Now they stay in the same place. This been going on since Cardinals game and no change yet. Before the season they was talking about making a change of "more freedom". Well it hasn't worked

Maybe they are playing more conservative because of the rookie Godfrey. It could be a coach's decision to not give up a big play and in doing so, they are giving up the underneath stuff and the other teams YAC is still getting us. Harris is great, Godfrey is going to be great. I believe this is the Secondary coach's way of helping Godfrey. He has been out of position more times than not. So IMO, the CB's are compenstating too much for a rookie
