I HAD To Make A Thread On This In Comparison To 05 Defense, I'm Sorry

I asked Mega a few weeks who was our DC in 05. He said Mike. I had to make sure cause watching some footage, I dont see what happened

I'm one of those who been going off on Ken Lucas this year. But I just realized that him and Gamble are physical corners. They like to bump and run. But I dont know where this loose zone coverage is coming from this year. So I had check

Watch the first play they show. Freeze it at :07... do you see that? How about 1:47

We played off on those skinny small receivers yesterday like they was Randy Moss or something. A few 3rd conversions came from playing off

05 Giants game http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d8007f4f7

Look at 1:24

Far as blitzing goes, I mean Ravens Eagles blitz. We dont see that

That's the difference in this year defense. Some people call it a conservative defense. But if we go back to 05, I guarantee you wont see many rambling about the defense. Same year Gamble had 7 int, and Lucas had like 8 including playoffs. You also might not notice Gamble & Lucas switched sometimes throughout the season. Now they stay in the same place. This been going on since Cardinals game and no change yet. Before the season they was talking about making a change of "more freedom". Well it hasn't worked

I'm sorry you made this thread as well.

lol

i give u props for research tho u did good

biggest difference is prolly then we caught int's

Thank you

I had to look at some old stuff. Yea, we dont have a DE end like Rucker to go along side Pep. But man the secondary is totally different

Our secondary is playing more zone, while we use a zone blitzing scheme. We actually are blitzing quite a bit but because we play 10 yards off the receiver it is easy for teams to throw to wide open guys. Problem is that our blitzes aren't working or we get a clear run to the quarterback and get faked out of our jock like Johnson did last night. If he makes the sacks the Giants don't complete a long pass down the field to se up their first TD. Our defense in 2005 was opportunistic but we made the plays. This year we have had just as many opportunities but haven't made them. How many potential picks have Lucas, Gamble and Beason dropped this year??

Sorry to bump this thread, but I didn't want to start a new one with the main topic being discussed.

But going back to the soft zone. Could the soft zone be the reason we only have 1 pass interference call all year? Has the soft zone stopped the number of big plays against us? I know it was the reason Lucas got scored on by staying too deep, has increased the number of short passes agaisnt us, and it has decreased our number of interceptions.

I'm not for the soft zone but these questions are in my mind, and I'm going to throw these ideas out there and see if anyone has the research.

Some have alluded to it but without looking up stats, I will tell you this is my impression: the 2005 defense was great at giving the ball back to the offense on turnovers. This one is NOT. This offense is good because it is productive pretty much all on its own. Imagine the Steelers' defense (minus the last game, outlier) with this offense? Good...lawdamighty.

Prevent D is what I've heard. Prevent big yard plays. Playing off to me is just giving receivers short yardage, which keeps drives going. Playing man to man/press coverage gives receivers what they earn. They have to fight their way to gain yards by going through you. There should be times we play off, then it should be times we dont. We play off all the time
