Panthers sign LB Tahir Whitehead

Smithers

Recommended Posts

Panthers signing the 6'2'' 241 lb. linebacker Tahir Whitehead to a one-year, $2.5 million contract may turn out good. He is big enough to help stop last years weakness of teams running up the middle. If for some reason Whitehead has problems in coverage, he could still be used as a important situational player.

I Ilke Simmons a lot but we have so many needs that we should be able to draft a great player to help us at other positions with the #7 first rd choice, if we don't select him.

Pretty good chance LIons go with Okudah at 3 after trading away Slay. Giants are the wildcard at 4, but a franchise OT to protect Jones makes a lot of sense for Gettleman.... he gets his hog molly too. Phins and Chargers need QBs, so I see Tua and Herbert/Love going there.

That should leave Simmons for us to choose between he and Brown. Give me Simmons all day in this scenario. Simmons helps the LB corps (Whitehead will be 30 this year and on a 1-yr deal) and he also helps solidify the secondary as a rover lending support to Burris & Boston.

If Simmons is on the board and they pass because of Whitehead signing that would terrible

Simmons has the potential to be a play maker and a future all pro Whitehead wont bring that type of play to an NFL team

A one year deal isn't going to keep the team from taking anybody.  Whitehead is just a warm body to help fill out the roster while the team looks for their long-term MLB.

Most likely, if they pass on Simmons, it will be because they liked someone such as Brown better (or as a better fit right now), or because someone else gave us some extra draft capital to move up to the #7 spot.  Regardless, Whitehead will have absolutely nothing to do with what we do in the draft.

All these signing are ok, but I feel someone needs to notify Marty Herniay of the current crisis at DT and CB. There is only one NFL player there for each group and even that is debatable. Draft is great and all, but rookies are only able to take on so much.

Simmons is my main hope/want as well, was Brown til that awful combine. My big issue is I normally dont value LB(or DB) in the top ten. Thats where you want to draft LT, edge, and QB. Im not big on Okudah at 7 either, still take him over brown. Simmons is target, he alone could cover many of the HUGE issues for the D. Its sooo rare for a defender to have nickle cover skills and be able to take on OTs for sacks/hurries/etc. Hes like the queen on the chess board. Offensives would have to focus on him, thus taking the pressure off the other 10 players.

I think this could mean we are drafting Simmons.  OLB vs ILB.  Here is what the Raider fans were saying on PFT:

Nice guy. Actually, a very nice guy, but he is not a good football player. He’s decent at best against the run, but I huge liability vs the pass.

Good guy with limited versatility. Nice to see him land on his feet. Hopefully they have a scheme that will be beneficial.

Get ready for missed tackles and blown coverages and lots of selfies.

Raiders fan here, I thought he was overrated in Detroit and then Oakland paid him more than they should have. He cannot cover to save his life, especially against RBs. I wouldn’t put him on the field on 3rd downs or passing downs but he cant still play a little.
