Horrible deal. Great WR class and we are giving our WR4 almost $4M? Did Hurney not learn from Torrey Smith’s $6M for 17 catches?

If we blow through this draft of cheap talented WRs to give Anderson and Roberts $16M for 1 year then we really do deserve what we get

I’m pretty sure we just blew threw our comp picks now. Oh well, I was hoping for a major rebuild through the draft to get us ready to dominate the division after Brees and Brady, with an almost 40 year old Ryan. Looks like we are hoping to slowly improve over 5-11 and get to a .500 team with a low ceiling.

Seemed like a panic move.

Correct if I'm wrong but couldn't they still release him.  I think he just has a small signing bonus.

it's so silly to me how people say "we could have gotten him for X!!" when the truth is that these general managers aren't giving out contracts with no basis. these agents are grimy, but they communicate with all teams to determine the value of their player and team owners/GMs do the same. what we end up giving is usually going to be the demand. for all we know, we had to pay a premium for all these 1 year deals. players hate them because you're in a prove it situation every day. plus they're trying to put a lot of expiring cap on the books for next season and keeping what helped them. if you have a strong belief in a player, you can put your name on it. until the snaps start, how about allowing things to play out so you don't look like an absolute dummy when a player performs to the standards of his deal. if/when it ends up being a bad signing, that's another matter. but getting worked up about a $4 million contract at a position we have precious little veteran depth is absurd. you can't just put 5 guys on the field that were in the NCAA last season and expect that to work. cheap drafted talent is cheap drafted talent because you have to teach them the basics of how to play the position and with virtually no time to do that as things appear to be headed, locking up depth down the WR depth chart doesn't hurt us. if we want to give Bridgewater a fighting chance, we have to insulate him with professionals.

Yes. We didn’t end up getting a comp pick for Ed Dickson when Charles Johnson (the WR) didn’t end up making the Jets 53. If we draft a WR, wouldn’t shock me at all if Roberts gets cut.

You are right that it was a panic move. Dude has 21 receptions and we almost double his salary. Awful contract given the draft.

Even if we don't draft one, they could possible still release him.  The past few years the WR market has been crazy, I'm sure Hurney thought he was getting a deal, but this year its different.

With this draft class I fully expect there to be some decent guys hit the market during preseason.

I haven’t seen the structure except the 3.75 number. But as you said, the low signing bonus one would assume it contains would make him a cut candidate.

And there is no season where this would be a good deal at 3.75M. But I don’t think Hurney had much to do with it anyhow.
