What do you prefer - Tank or Try to compete?

To tank or not?

  1. 1. To tank or not?

The Teddy Bridgewater signing can go one of two ways:

1. He can come in and be like a Delhomme for us and be a Cinderella story and try to pair with Brady to somehow compete for a playoff spot and beyond.

2. He can come in and be not much better than Allen and with our defense (on paper worse than our 2010 offense), we still tank for Trevor and use Teddy as a bridge QB and mentor.

I fully expect us to still essentially tank and use him as a bridge QB as that defense won’t resemble an NFL defense for at least a year or two, but who the hell knows what could happen. Maybe Rhule could get these guys buying in to the system and approach from day 1 and we can overachieve?

So,

Do you prefer:

A) Teddy not be that good and, combined with our terrible D, we tank for Trevor and are ultimately set up with a franchise QB for years to come?

or

B) Teddy is solid (but not a true franchise QB) and can run Brady’s offense well enough for us to overachieve and do a retool on D and have us competing for the playoffs and beyond for the next 3 years like we did in 2003-2005 with a Saints former backup QB? Then as far as QB goes for the future, we’d have to luck into one later in the draft and develop him or scout very well on a mid to late 1st rounder or trade up for one like Chiefs did with Mahomes, much bleaker future at the QB position with this choice, but no living through a 2010 season again to get our QB.

Hard to say. Do the Panthers have some sort of plan to draft a QB this year and let Teddy mentor them? I think Teddy is decent but I don’t think he’s the future. Of course is he balls out that’s great for the Panthers and will change my mind, but without seeing him play as of now and really not knowing the direction the team is going, I’d rather draft the future.

Tank. I wouldn't have signed a mediocre veteran bandaid at all. I would've carried over that cap space and rolled with Allen again for dirt cheap. We aren't competing any better with a bum kneed less fumbling version of Allen just because we're paying him a lot more than Allen.

The Teddy signing will make a lot more sense if we end up with Herbert or Love. Both guys could really benefit from a season on the bench and to learn from a guy like Teddy who has some familiarity with Brady.

If we don’t go QB then the Bridgewater signing is retarded. With Bridgewater at QB we won’t be in a position to draft Lawrence or Fields and we sure as hell won’t be competing for a playoff spot with this roster.

Tua could also use a year on the bench, to get closer to 100% healthy before taking a beating behind our OL. I think all 3 of those guys are in play for us this draft.

I’m not so convinced Teddy is all that much better than Allen when the OL is absolutely terrible. Even with him I think with our D the way it is now we still have a shot at Trevor if we want to go that route. What Teddy offers is being a veteran leader and mentor for young players and a young franchise QB.

I would’ve preferred a full on 100% from the start, we’re going 0-16 tank to get Lawrence, trading players for future picks, etc. Also would’ve used that Cam cap space instead of signing a QB like Teddy, I would’ve extended McC to a huge long term contract with it all frontloaded this year, I’m talking $25M+ cap hit, and very low cap hits in future years when we’ll be competing.

But that is a very hard sell and a bad mindset to instill from the start as a new coach coming in and trying to build a winner. Better to make it look like you’re trying to win by signing a QB like Teddy while really just planning to use him as a mentor and bridge stopgap QB while still sucking because of D, OL, etc.

But not sure if that’s what Rhule has in mind or if he’s going to try to win games and we get stuck in some brutal 7-9 purgatory. I hope not, but we’ll see. If we don’t draft a QB this year or tank for Trevor, I’ll be pretty pissed.

Compete

You have to start with the culture and trying to lose for a SINGLE player is not gonna help. Rhule said in a early interview that he will want a team that tries to compete. If they are 1-15 they will be a 1-15 team that tries if they are 7-9 they will be a 7-9 team that tries etc.

Everyone sees Trevor as the prize but if we say pick 5-9 next year I would full expect us to trade up for Fields or see how Newman does and have him sit. There isn't only "1" qb next year. Everyone thought Tua would be the prize this draft and *shocker* it turned out completely different. Who knows it could be freaking Trask as the #1 pick next year because YOU DONT KNOW.

There is no issue with riding this year as it is what it is and looking to the future at QB next year with a trade up if needed.

They are going to "compete" you pretty much have to in the NFL however this roster is easily one of the worst in the NFL right now.

I dont disagree. We have a bad roster that will take time to build up but the whole "lets just tank" mentality is aggravating.
