REPORT: Panthers have discussed Cam Newton with the Bears

The Bears are beating the bushes for quarterbacks, and they may have interest in taking on one who’s a little beat up at the moment.

According to Jonathan Jones of CBSSports.com, the Panthers have discussed a possible trade of quarterback Cam Newton to the Bears.

The obvious hurdle is the fact the Bears team doctors can’t give Newton a physical right now, per league directive.

If they were willing to trust an independent doctor, and Newton has recovered from shoulder and foot problems, they’d have a relative bargain at $18.6 million for the year, and an obvious upgrade over Mitchell Trubisky.

They talked to Teddy Bridgewater before he agreed to join the Panthers, and discussed a possible trade for Nick Foles as well.

If well, there’s a reasonable case to be made that Newton’s the best of the available starting quarterback options. That’s a big if, however.

But the Bears once traded four things to move up one spot in the draft to choose Trubisky second overall, so anything’s possible.

The Bears and Chargers seem like the best trade possibilities right now. Maybe the Patriots too but the thought of Marty Hurney negotiating with Bill Belichick makes me cringe.

Kinda doubt we're gonna get as good a value as we might have if the team hadn't bungled the PR.

As bad as the Panthers have handled the situation with Cam, I’ll be happy for any compensation at this point. We really dropped the ball on PR with this.

I think poo hit the fan when Brady said for sure that he wasn’t going back to NE. They became an instant suitor for Teddy and forced us to speed everything up.

Carolina has absolutely no leverage on this deal. Who is gonna give up anything for a QB that is injured. He might be fully healthy, but in the negotiations for him, hes injured.

We can only hope one of the teams do not want to get into a bidding war in FA if we cut him. A 4th round pick or up would be a success at this point as bad as we have handled everything.

Cam is actually worth the gamble.  If you get him in a trade, it is actually a one-year prove it deal.  Not a $120m, 4 year commitment.

I would make the deal based on a neutral physician's prognosis.

The Chargers have the most cap room, so adding Cam would not be that bad.  The Redskins have some room.  The Bears?  It would be harder for them, but they can do it.

Not really. It wasn't like we was getting a 1st or 2nd for a hurt QB. Never thought we would get that anything after that would be thrilled as hell.
