New Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater's 6.1 average depth of throw was easily lowest in the NFL last season

Its a sign that they think Hill will be a cheaper backup than Bridgewater, and has some future potential.

Saints want to keep Taysom Hill as Drew Brees' heir apparent

Quote

If (Brees) chooses to stay, the Saints will welcome him back with open arms. But the Saints also believe that in Taysom Hill, they have their quarterback of the future already on the roster.

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reported today that Saints coach Sean Payton believes that Hill is ready to become the Saints’ franchise quarterback as soon as Brees retires.

The problem for the Saints is that they only have about $12 million in cap space for 2020, and that makes it financially difficult to afford to keep both Brees and Hill. With Hill set to become a restricted free agent, the Saints may put a first-round tender on Hill and then wait to see whether some team makes him an offer. If that were to happen, the Saints would have to decide whether to match that offer or to take that team’s first-round draft pick.

Teddy Bridgewater, who took over for the injured Brees for five games last season and led the Saints to a 5-0 record, also becomes a free agent in March. There’s no way the Saints could afford to keep all three quarterbacks, so it would seem likely that they’ll let Bridgewater walk.

Until Brees decides whether to play in 2020 or retire, everything else is on hold. But it appears that the Saints have decided that Hill is next, whether that’s in 2020 or 2021.

Article doesn't dispute what I said.  If Brees comes back, they will have Hill as the backup.  If he doesn't come back, well we will see.

Personally I am not so sure that Payton and the Saints are that great at evaluating qb talent.  They lucked into Brees, but he was a fairly well know commodity when he came to New Orleans.

It says they believe in Hill as their quarterback of the future, and Jay Glazer is a very reputable source.

Whether or not they're right? Unknown, but they believe they are.

Yeah, it said that with $12M in cap space it would be difficult to keep both Brees and Hill.  What went unsaid is that it would have been impossible to keep both Brees and Bridgewater.

Again, this looks like a financial reality being sugar-coated as part of a master plan.  Would anyone really expect Payton to say they would much rather have Brees and Bridgewater, but they will be stuck with Brees and Hill instead?

Hill allows them to run the gadget plays they built around him, I will give him that.

It was reported a long time ago that they'd let Bridgewater walk in favor of Hill.

Hill is a source of heavy debate among both Saints fans and beat writers. The gist of a lot of it is that people don't think he's really as good as Payton believes he is.

Whether or not he is, no idea. But I've read enough to believe that Payton thinks he is.

Their salary cap situation was also known a long time ago.  It has been rumbling at them like a 125-car freight train coming down a hill.

We're paying 20 million a year (more than Cam) for a noodle armed game manager, while simultaneously taking ourselves out of position to draft Lawrence or Fields.

I can't imagine a worse possible decision that could have been made.

Cam has a strong arm now you say?

Don't we say that every year?

Eventually it catches up with a team.  They essentially pulled a Hurney and went all-in for last season (the last two, actually).

The difference is obviously they have a "slightly" different definition of moves that are all-in, and thus have been better at it.  Although the prize they are going all-in for is still allusive.  But, at least they got close enough to smell it.  We won't get into what our efforts smell like.

Hill did make a couple of nice passes last year.  And maybe he will be a competent qb.  Maybe even a poor man's Cam Newton.  But as a Panther fan, I look forward to the day when Hill is in and Brees is done.

I'm not that big a fan of Mickey Loomis, but since they brought Jeff Ireland aboard they've been drafting waaaayyy better than us.

That simply can't be.  After all, Hurney is a great evaluator of college talent, isn't he?

Maybe the problem is that he doesn't understand doing a great job of evaluating it does you little good if you don't follow that up by actually drafting it.
