If people were more a fan of a player than the team, I don't really blame them for following that player to another destination.

Being a player fan is a perfectly valid choice. I just don't necessarily take player fans seriously when they talk about what's best for the franchise because they're biased. They might be right, but they're often coming from a skewed perspective.

Still, it's just sports fandom. People can cheer for or against whomever they want.

Me? I'll always cheer for the Panthers, even if I don't think they're making smart moves. If that were enough to get me to renounce my fandom, I'd have been gone a long time ago.
