Panthers To Allow Cam Newton To Seek Trade

Guys, seriously, please tell me you're not that dense.

The reason Pacman was used in my example is because he is the EXACT OPPOSITE of Cam.

Pacman has NEVER BEEN the face of the franchise (as Cam has been).

Pacman has NEVER kept his nose clean off the field (Cam always has).

Pacman HAS been suspended multiple times (Cam hasn't).

Pacman has had CONSISTENT public legal troubles related to violence, alcohol abuse, consorting with drug dealers, etc...(Cam hasn't).

So, a major part of the point is Pacman HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH Cam Newton, in fact he is the POLAR OPPOSITE....

....but even after missing 2 full seasons ('07 and '09) in his first 5 years of eligibility due to suspensions related to off-field transgressions -- Pacman played in 107 NFL games in the ensuing 9 years.

To reiterate the point, if a player has value in terms of making material on-field contributions the NFL labor market will figure it out and pay up for it.

This is also true of Cam no matter what the Panthers do (or don't do).

I'm not talking about being mad at the Panthers like they're a fan on a forum or facebook. I'm talking about creating the "intangibles".

Boston will be a professional, and he'll play the best he can. But is he really going to give a poo when it comes to "winning" or adding to the supposed new "culture" the team will now have? Even if it's not the highest priority in his career, would he aspire to be a Panther Hall of Honor member?

**** no. He's just seen how the current regime has treated the best player in Panthers history. He also knows he'll be short on that by the time his contract is up. So he's not going to give a **** when things gets a little hard and he's not sure if it'll be worthwhile for him to make a difference.

Let’s take our Panther shades off for a second. Steve Smith is the greatest Panther in our history. Second, If Cam never plays another down, I’m not even sure Cam gets into the Hall of Fame. Cam had the highest ceiling of any QB in our history, but his injures may keep him from ever starting again, much less earn a place in Canton. Time will tell.

My point, somethings fishy about the non release of him by now and rumors are there been trade talks but the asking price hasn’t been “high” don’t know what we are trying to accomplish by hanging on to him this long

Ask yourself this, what do the Panthers have to gain by releasing Cam prior to the deadline?  (which is April 15th?)

Smith or Newton as the best Panther is a contentious issue.

I'm a low ranked poster here. I'm not going to now spend 2,000 posts justifying Cam as no1 when it means I'll have to poo on Smith.

Cam is no1, and not just on his jersey.

That is subjective, Cam was a great player. Unfortunately, injures destroyed his potential. It’s all opinion, I appreciate your view. I loved what Cam brought to this team, and more importantly what he brought to the community. However, unless Cam would play his final year out, our hands are tied and he has very little value to any team. No one knows how healthy he truly is or what he could bring to the table.

They don’t have anything to gain or lose, his trade value is only going to get lower until Maybe, maybe the draft and almost insanity to Keep him until tc looking for compensation

You never know.

Things change fast in the NFL and maybe some QB on another team is dumb enough to play some pickup hoops and blow out a knee...

...may portend for a trade that will benefit the Panthers.

Releasing Cam any time prior to 60-seconds before the deadline will definitively gain nothing for the Panthers.

Retaining him for the same time-frame probably won't deliver anything material for the Panther coffers but you never know!

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
