Panthers To Allow Cam Newton To Seek Trade

Players do talk to each other.

It's all about the benjamins.

Tre Boston went on the radio questioning what was going on and saying for a lot of guys the decision would hinge on what happened with Cam -- and then Tre signed right up again.

Players are going to take the highest offer, talk is cheap.

cam depressed his own value with multiple ig videos.  he got clapped for it.   in the long run the team has done him a favor.  he's going to be released most likely and he can see what he's worth on the open market, signing with a team he wants to.

You don't really believe that anything Cam has put on Instagram so far has tanked his value, do you? He hasn't had any Antonio Brown episodes.

Cam's value has tanked because he can't visit teams to work out for them and get examined by their doctors, nor could he probably pass a physical at the moment. That makes his value pretty low as of 3/21/2020. But, that is likely to change when he is able to visit these teams and it is also likely to change as he is able to pass a physical. His trade value will likely never be an issue because he is way more likely to get released.

Truthfully, the Panthers releasing word that they were "allowing him to seek a trade" is probably what tanked his value (whatever that value was at the time).

Granted, his reaction to it might not have helped, but it was already out there. At that moment, everyone knew that the team was moving on from him.

Rodrigue posited that once they had Bridgewater, they might not have cared anymore. I didn't take that idea too seriously when I first read it, but I've pondered it some since then.

It could be plausible.

I am quite sure that had an impact because any team with even passing interest now knows that they don't have to trade for him but just wait for him to be released.

Not to mention he will be entering a crowded QB market which will mean prospective teams can get him at a lower salary.

If I were Cam, I'd take the best possible spot to compete and just take a lower "prove it" deal. At this point that is what he needs. If he can show in 2020 he has recovered, he will get a lot of interest in 2021.

I said this on another thread---in my opinion, Cam (probably under the guidance of his agent)  released the "commitment" instagram right before the combine. He had to know that Rhule and Marty would be asked about it by reporters.  Playing the media and fan base against the coaching staff and front office to negotiate a contract is not a new thing.  However, when you are coming off 2 years of ineffectiveness with only 1 elite, productive season on your current contract, it was a pretty bold move.  If rumors are accurate, he wanted a 5-year extension.  That is crazy talk.  I wonder if it inspired the Panthers to go after Bridgewater?  We signed Allen and Bridgewater during the tampering period--as soon as we possibly could---in response the "commitment" comment.

They provided a 3 year commitment, just not to Cam.

The biggest mystery to me right now is why he hasn't already been let go.

It's possible they still think they can get an offer for him, but come on...

Are they waiting for Bridgewater to be official? What are they going to do, not cut him if Bridgewater fails his physical? Please...

Do they want Newton to take a physical so they can up his trade value if he passes or cut him with a "failed physical" designation if he doesn't? That doesn't really seem practical under the circumstances.

Who knows at this point?

Nothing the team did or said tanked his value.  Teams were going to find out he was hurt one way or another

I don't doubt that the team tried to trade him and failed.

But at the same time, you'd have to say that both the act of signing Bridgewater and their making a clear statement hat Newton wasn't going to be a Panther anymore had an effect.

My only question at this point is was it a dumb move or is Jourdan right that they just stopped caring?

I'm starting to lean toward the latter.

Is there anybody else besides myself who thinks he doesn't end up with Washington when all is said and done?

Seems like Ron might give him another chance as they have worked it the past. I know they didn't seem like the best of friends during the end, but I believe Ron has a soft spot for Cam in his heart and will give him another shot.

Only as a backup, and that's conditional on the speculation you mentioned about them not being the best of friends. If Ron has issues with the way Cam handled his injuries and how clear he was with staff about the nature of his injuries, that trust might be gone. Plus, Washington has Haskins. Have to think Ron is going to roll with him as starter. Cam isn't at the "i'll be a vet backup to help the young QB" level of his career yet, I don't think.
