Panthers To Allow Cam Newton To Seek Trade

JOE FLACCOQB, UNSIGNED FREE AGENT

Broncos waived Joe Flacco with a failed physical designation.

As expected, the Drew Lock era is now in Denver. Flacco missed the final eight games of the 2019 season due to a neck injury. He was fairly horrendous prior to the injury, posting a 6-to-5 TD-to-INT ratio while averaging a pedestrian 6.6 adjusted yards per attempt. It might be tough for Flacco to find a team willing to make him their Week 1 starter in 2020, but his final year with the Ravens showed that he might be a solid veteran backup that is willing to help mold younger QBs.

I don't know if his shoulder is shot, but that's the problem. Nobody else does either. I strongly suspect anyone who does sign him is going to do so on a "prove it" contract.

The "little commitment" that he talked about wanting probably isn't going to happen. His best bet for that might have been the Panthers given his history here, but they've already answered "no".

I also think that many teams scared of his past shoulder issues also realize he may not be the same mobile type quarterback he once was with the Lisfranc injury.

Cam has always been known to have suspect accuracy, especially throwing the ball way too high, that a team would really want the mobile version of Cam to extend plays and be more versatile than a pocket passer.  The Lisfranc injury is a bad one to have as recurrence happens in a majority of cases in athletics.

The combo shoulder/foot injuries aren't doing him any favors, especially if he wants more than a one year "prove it" deal.  I hate that it's come to this because Cam deserved better.

I do think at this point that the Panthers releasing him sooner rather than later is gonna be the best thing for him.

With the quarterbacks already out there, if they hold off too long he may not have much of a market left.

Imagining it is the only way you're gonna see it cause that ain't happenin'

There's no way in hell a team is going into a season with 40 million of their salary cap tied up in two quarterbacks.

Unless someone comes in with some kind of trade offer, and probably soon, Newton is being cut. Any idea of keeping him at this point is pure fantasy.

So is thinking that Newton would want to be here after everything that's happened.

The 5 top QBs are making around 30+ mil.

Look at the CAP HIT for THIS YEAR Cam at 20 mil Teddy at 8 mil...so under 30 mil for both Qbs

but then again I don't know how the cap works just looking at the numbers and contacts.

The cap isn't going to allow you to have two guys at the same position making that kind of money when one of them is a backup. You'd have to majorly skimp at other positions which is definitely not in the team's best interest.

Couple it with the fact that Newton and the Panthers aren't exactly best friends right now and it's pretty clear that it ain't going to happen.

Rhule said he is trying to create a culture with no name starters

What a horrible, horrible idea and a horrible thought.

I mean, what would NFL history be without stand-out names/players like Johnny U?  Broadway Joe?  Mean Joe Greene? Too Tall Jones?  Ted
The Stork" Hendricks?  And that's just to name a very few of hundreds and hundreds.

"The name on the back of the jersey doesn't mean anything, its the name on the side of your helmet" is college rah-rah bullpoo.  It was college rah-rah bullpoo in the NFL by the time the 1960's rolled around, it sure as HELL is college rah-rah bullpoo in the 2020's.

I can’t imagine Cam wanting to play in that scenario. It would be an insult to Cam to make him “compete” with a lesser talent. He’s been the starter for years and will refuse to play.

On top of the fact that there's not a snow-fairies chance in the 9th circle of hell that Cam would "win" the job and it would have nothing to do with talent or performance.

One guy is gone after next year at the LATEST.

One guy was just pursued by this coaching staff and tied down with a 3 year contract.

EVERYONE knows who would "win" that job.  To even call it a "competition" would be even more of an insult to Cam than they've already managed.
