Panthers To Allow Cam Newton To Seek Trade

With a star QB as a starter, maybe.

Nobody is paying a backup quarterback 20 million dollars.

It sure as heck ain't happenin' here.

Oh not in current Carolina. Heck no. That would be beyond stupid. Just saying it's coming to the NFL sooner than we think.

Starters will get $35M+ and backups will be in the $5M range.

The organization really screwed Cam on this and hopefully he's learned a valuable lesson about loyalty, business and perceptions

An interesting quote from Jordan Rodrigue in The Athletic article where she and Joe Person analyze the Panthers free agency...

The breakup is messy — with the Panthers’ press release phrasing that made it sound like Newton asked for a trade, and Newton firmly refuting that notion — and an agreed-upon trade in place with quarterback Teddy Bridgewater less than two hours later.

So far, Newton’s market doesn’t look good. And either the Panthers knew that ahead of time and didn’t mind essentially tanking his trade market by effectively moving on from him while he was still on the roster, or they know it now and will release him if they can’t get anything for him.

Some have valued Cam more than they should. He’s simply not a great QB and I think we are finding out most teams feel the same way, especially with his most recent injury issues.

Cam was a great QB.  But it can't be understated how big a question mark his injuries are for teams.  It has been years since he completed a season healthy.

That said... Someone will sign him.  But trading for him...? Not worth the loss in assets, it seems.

That literally reads as the organization being spiteful. Not a good look.

And a little Machiavellian, depending on how you take it.

I get the speculation, but I don't really buy it. I think it's more just a case of them not knowing what they're doing.

Yeah. I think they are in Gettleman mode. Just making moves without any real concept of how to not make it look like you are a raging asshole. It is a business and MOST of these guys get that.

Said in another thread: I can excuse Rhule because he's never had to deal with anything like this. Tepper? Yeah, he's an a--hole. No shock.

But Marty? I get that this wasn't his call, but one of Marty's few strengths was supposed to be the ability to let players go with grace and dignity.

That obviously didn't happen this time..

I think the one thing we are probably learning about Marty is that he just goes with the flow. He is probably the penultimate "yes man."

Frustration more than spite is my guess.

I still stand by my conspiracy theory that the team knew he wasnt going to play for them,  know he is still hurt and knew he had no trade value so they do a deep state type plan that looks like Hurney botches this all and it gives tepper cover to finally fire hurney.  In short Tepper set up Marty to be the fall guy for letting cam go.

Honestly doubt anyone picks him up prior to the start of the season. My prediction is a starting QB will go down and then a team come calling. Cam will be ready and he'll take over.

Either that or Rivera will take a flyer on him after he's released, or Boston Bill scoops him up. Not sure the Patriots would be the best fit for Cam. Could they win games together? A healthy Cam and Bill could have another run at a dynasty. Would Bill and Cam be the best marriage? Not so sure about that.

    • We can't afford to reach for one of the first round QBs this year. I would love for nothing more than Bryce to be the reason we don't even scout the bastards
