If the Panthers have no intention of using him/are building solely for the future and not the present; and just want his salary off the books.  They could definitely trade him for a 5th rounder.  There is SOME team out there that would take that gamble.

For what it's worth I'm not at all suggesting that they should; just the logic of getting ANYTHING rather than an outright release.
