REPORT: Panthers returning to a 4-3 defense from a 3-4, which Ron Rivera changed to - in part - at the urging of owner David Tepper

i'm reading that ron rivera made the decision and then told the locker room he was being pressured into it - so if it failed he had a built in excuse.    this seems more likely than the scenario that's being presented

Some of you are really half-full thinkers.

Let's say Tepper did urge Ron to go to a 3-4 because of some analytics or whatever. He sees the failure of the defense and realizes once he decided to can Ron and hunt for a coach to no longer stick his nose into actual football scheme. So he brings in a guy and says "do you, do what you want on the field, let me know what you need or want". So we get Rhule who promptly hires his staff with a lot of familiar faces to him and people he trusts.

Is it possible that Tepper was going the way of Jerry Jones and changed once he realized he was in over his head there?

BTW, Burns is not strictly a 3-4 LB. 4-3 schemes can and do allow for stand-up ends some and I bet in obvious passing downs, Burns may end up standing if he prefers to. He can pack on size without sacrificing much speed and have his hand in the dirt as a 4-3 end. He's 249, could easily play close to 260 this season. I believe the average weight of a 4-3 DE in the NFL today is something like 265-270, so he is right there. To say Burns CAN'T be successful in a 4-3 based on his size or skillset is ridiculous.

I haven't seen anything that leads me to give Tepper that much credit.

My general impression of him right now is he's a guy who thinks he knows what he's doing, but really doesn't.

Hope I'm wrong, because frankly that's the worst kind of NFL owner you can have.

Tepper forcing the change may have been as simple as him grilling Rivera in the offseason about what he was doing to fix the defense, which was not great in 2018, either (although better when Rivera started calling the plays himself).  Having no answer other than the typical idea that we'll do more of what we were doing, the change to a 3-4 might have been suggested, perhaps strongly.

That is just an idea, but is consistent with what we know of the two personalities involved.  Let's keep in mind, nobody around this organization had been held accountable for anything prior to Tepper, and given his reputation, I could easily see Rivera and Hurney for that matter, taking his suggestions as edicts.

I work with a guy who would change directions at the drop of a hat if his handlers suggested it, whether he thought it would work or not.  In fact, he would change directions if he thought his handlers might suggest something (and he has).  I don't think Rivera is that weak, but if he felt like he had no answers, his DC was not up to the task, and he didn't want to make that change, he might try anything.

A lot of unknowns in this whole scenario.

My boss suggests I look at changing things all the time, and if believe in them, I implement them.  If I don't agree, I argue my case.  To me, it sounds like Ron was a weak coach.

If I was a multiple coach of the year winner, I don't do a damn thing I don't want to.  Don't like it, fire me.  So if Ron gave in, good riddance.

As I stated in the Ron Rivera appreciation post his hands were tied and JR and Tepper were not allowing him full freedome in this organization. To see Tepper let Rhule have say so let's you know Tepper was not all in nor supportive of Ron. This is a pure case a favor and ego. Happy for Ron.

I was assured that David Tepper must have a great football mind because he's rich.

Are you telling me this isn't true?

Ha, I have been very vocal about Tepper since he got here, most of it pretty bad, but was really hoping that he would figure it out...may not happen.

Frustrating is an understatement.
