REPORT: Panthers will not tank, working more of a mixed reboot than total rebuild.

Makes total sense.  All the tank rhetoric was preposterous from the start and Cam sure isn't going to want to go through something like that.  I look forward to seeing what Team Marty/Rhule/Tepper put together and I'm optimistic!  8-8 would be a step in the right direction and a natural waypoint on this journey Tepper is taking us on.

Yeah! 8-8 would be amazing. A couple more years and maybe we’ll get back to 2017. Then we can spend $35-40M a year on Cam and not have much cap space for FAs and we’ll just keep on trucking.

Why are we cheering for 8-8?

I just hope all this talk is to keep fans interested but our D is so freaking bad we won’t compete for anything anytime soon unless we build up the talent. Can’t do that without comp picks and high picks. We’ve got so many holes and they seem to be getting bigger when Luke leaves and probably others.

The cap is projected to rise dramatically and if you look at our long term financial commitments, we are probably looking at having Colts levels of salary cap available even with Cam at a big contract. That is making the big assumption that we don't go "full Hurney."

To get this team to 8-8 it is. Cam or no Cam, this D is bottom 5 even with a few draft picks without using a lot of cap space/killing our comp pick potential. Throw in the OL that likely puts Cam on IR week 3 again and you either recognize we are a ways away or you waste a lot of money like we have been the past three years. Kalil x2, Olsen, Poe, Paradis, Smith, etc.

I don't think I agree with the dire projections of our defense yet. It may take 2-3 seasons to rebuild but we don't have to mortgage the future to achieve a better defense. We just need to make wise draft choices and shrewd free agent signings.

It isn't impossible to improve our franchise dramatically in a relatively short period of time. The question remains whether or not we have the architects and builders to make it happen.

With a healthy Cam:

Offensively this team should be much better than 2015. Okung and Moton are HUGE upgrades over what the team had at Offensive Tackle that year. Paridis will be improved from last season. He will. And Brady HAS to, HAS to be an upgrade over Shula. sheesh! We'll definitely miss Olsen though. No doubt about that.

Defensively, they're not as bad as some make them out to be. Will the team miss Luke and TD? Of course. Is it still missing Star? Yes. Draft a competent run stuffing DT and pick up another stop gap DT from FA and we'll be ok. That 2015 secondary was old and slow and just not a lot of athleticism to be honest. But they played within the system and did their jobs. They COULD do the same this season.

You don't tank when you have a franchise QB. It just doesn't make sense.

Hurney must be confident that we still do have a franchise QB. I would imagine they get updates on Cams progress. He’s posting workout videos of him sprinting and dropping 40 yard dimes. I’m guessing Cam is feeling very good and the offense is about to be prolific.

Can you post a link to the running and throwing videos?

We will just have to outscore everybody next year.
