THOMAS DAVISLB, UNSIGNED FREE AGENT
3135.jpg

NBC Washington's JP Finlay expects the Redskins to have interest in free agent LB Thomas Davis.

The Redskins connection is obvious — Davis played under Ron Rivera for eight seasons with the Panthers. Washington could use a veteran presence with Jon Bostic a free agent and may take a look at Davis if he doesn't retire. Entering his age-37 season, Davis shouldn't cost much on a one-year deal.

What makes Luke a coach, and have the ability to coach, but not Thomas? Assuming you believe Luke could go into coaching

I don't assume that Luke could go into coaching.  I would say that both were incredible athletes.  Luke is known for knowing what the other team was going to run before they did--other QBs have commented on how smart he was pre-snap.  How did he do that?  Film study, but not everyone who watches a lot of film can do that. I would want a coach that can break down the offense like he did --- on the field, no less.  That makes me think he might be a better coach than other superstars.  Davis is a great person, and I know how hard it is to overcome surgeries--the fact that he did it 3 time is amazing.  So he might be a different kind of coach, but I am not sure you can coach what he did.  Davis, to me, is the second most inspirational leader this team has known--behind or beside Sam Mills.

I did not target Luke and Davis--I made a general statement and someone (fairly) tried to find exceptions.

But I am guessing--all I can do.

From what I know, Thomas was just as much as a studier of film or film rat as Luke. He had to be to be, as good as he was for us. If Luke can be a successful coach, then Thomas can be as well.

When you say, "From what I know...."  I was basing my opinion on the same premise.  We do not know if Luke's pre-snap reads were paralleled by Davis--Luke gets the attention for it.  I never heard other QBs say that about Davis.  My point was never about Luke and Davis, however.  My point was that many superstars do things unconsciously because they are great athletes, etc. where overachievers often have to perfect the fundamentals and mechanics to become average.  They tend to make the better coaches because they are conscious of the things that must occur.  It is a theory--but name a superstar that was a great coach or manager and I can name 20 who were minor league players, role players, backups, etc.  Give it some thought if you have not.  It is something a man told me that I used to umpire with (an old man who played professionally with the Senators under Ted Williams as the manager)--he is the one who told me how bad Williams was and shared the thought with me.  I have tried to prove it wrong for some time, and I think he had a point.

Imo and I could be wrong, outside of stamina Luke wasn't that athletically freaky. I think he busted his tail and overachieved to become one of the best lbs to play the game and think if not for his body he would have easily been the best. If you asked him to run 300 yards and make a tackle he could all day but he wasn't as gifted with athleticism as say shaq or TD.

He had a pretty impressive vertical and 40 time---but Davis is stud in terms of an athlete--and he was the total package because he was a great leader, inspirational human being in many ways, and he was a very smart player.  Imagine if he had not had to go through 3 knee surgeries--he might have been one of the GOATs.

He’s old and done people. Get over him and get out of your feels. Goddamn bunch of hurney 2.0s up in this forum

Kinda strong language for an opinion that really is nothing more than an opinion.  I agree with you, but I do not get the finger pointing and cursing--just state your opinion.
