Marty Checking out Herbert

I like Herbert as a prospect. I really do. However, there are a lot of reasons to be afraid of what will happen once he finally leaves Eugene Oregon. It could be a more difficult transition than you think.

And as much as the media questions Cam's love for the game (they don't know jack), he spends more of his free time involved with football than almost any player in the NFL. This man eats, sleeps and breathes football. He isn't built the way he is by accident either. I think he just needs a REAL offensive/QB mind to mold him. That, and to get healthy. Norv had Cam on the right track, but the FO couldn't afford to let him sit and heal. I think Cam will be ready to set the league on fire beginning in 2020 - assuming COVID 19 has run its course by then.

Tua on the other hand... if that dude is somehow available, the FO will HAVE to strongly consider pulling the trigger.

You can have all the talent in the world, and yes it does take a certain degree of talent to play this game at the highest level, but in order to truly be one of the GOATS you have to be a great off the field as well as on the field and that truly does require a love of the game.

And as Jerry Garcia from the Grateful Dead has said, "Without Love in the Dream it'll never come true."

Last year everyone knew that we were taking Grier at 100. For over a month. Letting everyone know who you want can cause nothing but problems. I could see the Chargers calling us on draft day, convincing Marty they were drafting him unless we gave up next years first to move up 1. Chargers draft whoever they were going to at 6 anyway.

Usually you have a handful guys you want at each pick. If you fall in love with a guy that you think will go higher you trade up (Greg Little). But that's not something I see them doing. If Hurney had Brown, Simmons, Okudah, Tua and Herbert cards in his hand on draft night I wouldn't be surprised. One of them will be available.

I will admit to being intrigued. He has good size, an elite arm, and is mobile. Having said that, I have never even seen him play.

Burrow will not be available.

Tua scares me. His injury history and relatively small stature are not a good combination. Furthermore, as crazy as it sounds, being left- handed is a bit of a problem also.

Love also has an elite arm and while his poor 2019 play is somewhat understandable given the change in coaching staffs and surrounding talent, it is still a red flag.

Eason is also intriguing. He has arm talent, but, like Herbert, I have never seen him play.

I am not a fan of Hurts. While a very good athlete his passing ability seemed limited the times I saw him play at Alabama. Also, against a quality opponent in the playoffs, his play for Oklahoma was not great in the playoffs.

Same page---across the board.

Remember, James Morgan.  He will rise.

What has Herbert done to make you think he does not love the game?

Saying is one thing, he can say he loves whatever he wants at the podium. All the prospects can and they all do, why wouldn't they? Truth is you don't know, hell they might not even no if they do until they've gone through it until they've faced adversity and still come out saying "I love this game" you see so many prospects fail because at the end of the day the game just isn't worth that kind of commitment to them. It's overwhelming. It's nothing personal against Herbert. They reach that pinnacle of being a 1st round draft pick and are forced to work even harder to be a good NFL quarterback, a lot of guys don't have it in them that's why Qb is the HARDEST position to field above average talent at. Only a handful of teams get that year in and year out and the teams who are constantly drafting quarterbacks are always some of the worst in the NFL. It's nothing personal against Herbert he may possibly be one of the GOATs but we don't need him. Not while we still have Cam. And I don't really care that you guys don't believe he can return to form. I do and that's that and until Cam is no longer a member of the Carolina Panthers he is the future at the Qb position at least for the foreseeable future. Whether you guys choose to believe that or not that's on you. Qb will NOT be the position we draft at #7.

Lol. Seriously read your first paragraph. You are trying SO hard. It's barely two weeks into March just because he hasn't taken an "Official" physical for the team does not mean he can't pass one. You act is if Cam was someone who was hurt all of the time. The injuries hes had he can 100% come back from. You're acting as if Cam was Thomas Davis and tore his Acl 3 years in a row. Just because you have an injury doesn't mean you're broken. Especially when talking about Cam Newton.

I'd much rather bet on a Cam Newton who is focused and driven to be the GOAT AND a blue chip defender rather than some young unknown commodity in Herbert. You just dont know what you're going to get mentally with these guys. It is a HUGE gamble.

I don’t even want Herbert. I just laugh as if Cam’s heart somehow matters more than his foot and shoulder. I’m pretty sure he was doing everything he could last off-season. Again, he hasn’t taken a physical and everything we hear from the team always talks about Cam’s health. Rhule even said “months” in his conference a few weeks ago and alluded to a scenario where Cam might not be ready until September. Why even say something like that if he clearly could pass a physical right now? Cam’s been having shoulder issues since 2016. He’s a strong armed mobile QB with 4 years of shoulder issues and missed a year with a foot issue.

I mean just the emotion of your reply shows that you are wanting him to come back strong. It doesn’t mean he’s healthy. We’ve seen this show the past three off-seasons (I don’t think he was hurt to start 2016) and only one time did he finish the year.

Come on Marty, 'smoke and mirrors' for once in your freaking career!!!  While you are at it, check out Love too.  Gotta convince those mid-round QB needy teams the Panthers may actually pull the trigger at #7 on a QB.  Keep the trade down option viable if our top guys are off the board.

Marty can't do this simply based off BPA.  Herbert is the #3 or even #4 QB (some have Love ahead of him) over the #1 or #2-OT, LB, DT and WR.  I know it sounds funny that you can reach at #7, but it actually would be.

Plus, Oregon + QBs = Bust

I personally like Love better. Had worse stats, but much less talent around him. If Love was on Oregon I think he would be right there with Tua for the number 2 pick. Both are still questionable with tons of talent. I just think Love has more talent and a better excuse for not producing the way he was projected. Over all I would prefer no QB this year and see what Cam does. We have way too many needs and I think next year will have a great group of young passers.

That is the reason many of us are concerned and feel that maybe his body has taken too much abuse to finish a season at age 31.  The CamCulters call us haters because we do not bow at the alter of 2015 (when Cam was 26 and had taken about 500 fewer hits).  Panther fans love Cam--but nothing lasts forever.  The way Cam was handled by RR does not equate to "long career" in the NFL.  Those same people cheering when Cam pulled the ball and kept it while taking a LB head on at the first down marker are now mad at the world because some feel the bill for that is now being paid.
