Secondly you referred to testing as part of the death rate. Testing has nothing to do with death rate, testing is part of THE RATE OF INFECTION. 2 completely different things. 

Well you have to know how many are infected vs how many die to get the mortality rate.

The death rate for the flu is believed to be around .01%, where as the death rate for Coronavirus is believed to be anywhere between 1% and 3%

Yeah, I find it fascinating that I keep reading about entire households that are getting it, like in Wuhan, and yet there is one family member that doesn't develop it.  I don't know if it's genetic or environmental, but it's worth finding out once the smoke clears.

Australia barely has over 100 cases. We don't have nearly enough information on their outbreak yet to make any determination at all. Cold/flu doesn't go away in the summer either, but it's drastically reduced. Since we have no herd immunity resistance to a novel virus, "drastically reduced" is going to be relative to spreading like wildfire.

The death rate, better known as mortality rate, is defined as deaths/cases. Deaths is pretty hard to miss. May miss a handful but when you die the coroner figures out what killed you. Cases can only be accurately defined with widespread testing. Either everyone or everyone with symptoms. The US has been refusing to test people unless they came back from a danger area such as China.

The mortality rate in the US was close to 5% a few days ago. In South Korea where they do extensive testing it is .6%. South Korea administers like 150 times as many tests per capita than we do.

Yeah, that happens.  The person likely has a natural immunity to it.  This happened back in the days of the Black Plague.  While most of the world was affected, some people did not get sick and die.  Their bodies were able to fight off the pathogen.  People like that are special, because their blood can be used to synthesize a possible vaccine but the WHO is already closing in on one as the virus' genome has been mapped.

However, Tom Hanks and his wife have contracted the disease while they were in Australia. Out of all the people in Australia he managed to get it, so he and his wife are 2 out of the 100 reported? If you don’t report it, then the numbers will not change that much.

  • 7 of these cases are considered to be import-related
• 28 cases, including 2 deaths, do not have a reported history of overseas travel
  • 8 of these cases are associated with an aged care facility in NSW. 2 residents of this facility have sadly died
  • 2 cases are either directly or indirectly associated with attendance at a workshop
  • 18 cases are close contacts of known cases, with further details pending
• The likely place of exposure for a further 3 newly reported cases is under investigation

That also highlights how well another country is tracking their infections to try to identify routes of community spread where as a lot of the cases here results in a big old shrug of the shoulders as to where and how they were infected. The most likely answer to that is probably that it's simply already widespread in our communities.

Great job getting the info. My point is that it is impossible to know how Tom Hanks contracted the virus. Less than 100 people means the odds are slim that he met with an individual in your list. So how did he get it? He got it from someone that is not listed or counted yet as they have not been tested. Same thing over here in the states. This disease is at least a week ahead of what is being reported.

Yeah, there are definitely a lot of unidentified cases everywhere. But, he was there shooting a movie so he was probably hanging out with a bunch of high flying globe trotters. Good chance he was exposed due to contact from someone who isn't Australian.

They are both the President and Vice President of THE US of A. If you think for one second they haven’t been tested or monitored 24/7 you have your head in the sand.
