It will be okay, though. This isn't going to be the bubonic plague revisited, or even the 1918 Influenza pandemic. We have better medical technology, better understanding of epidemiology, better communications, better nutrition and a whole host of other items that should give everyone hope and peace of mind. Yeah, it will possibly get rough, but as much as anything for the average person it will just be a massive inconvenience for a while. For those with elderly family members or who have lung ailments, keep them in your prayers and do everything you can for them.

Until this all passes, just wash your hands, avoid big crowds and show common courtesy to those around you. The world is going to have to slow down for a bit, make the most of it.

Nobody is calling for panic but please stop trying to downplay how dangerous his virus is.  According to the WHO, 1 in 5 people become seriously ill.  There is no telling how this Virus may behave and evolve.  It is time for everyone to do their part and stop the spread of this deadly virus.  Plenty of people who are not elderly or even without compromised immune systems have died as well.

He's not downplaying. He's just being realistic and not irrationally panicking. Statistically speaking, your last sentence is incorrect. Sure, there are always outlier cases, but the under 40 global mortality rate is 0.2%. This pandemic is primarily about protecting the elderly and immuno-compromised as well as trying to prevent the healthcare system from being overran which would lead to a serious health crisis not just from coronavirus but other medical issues requiring care as well.

Wasn't downplaying it one bit. Was keeping perspective, though.

Obviously you have not been reading or listening about these events that have been happening. There is a premature pandemic according to the top doctors in NY that (calling for world panic) and this always happens with a new virus because people do not know about it or what it can do first.

i can't say FU enough.   i guess you don't have immune system compromised people in your life.  yeah, just go back to work.

H said he would have since the viruses effect was mild and not severe like many are. But he knows well enough to not do it and spread it to coworkers.

I had to travel for work on Monday (yeah I know...) and we load the plane and taxi out to the runway. Then we stop. The flight attendants walk down the isle talk to someone then go back to their seats. Then the pilot goes on the PA and says there is a medical emergency and we go back tot he terminal. 

2 EMT's come on the plane and start talking to a 40ish Asian dude a few rows behind me. Then he gets up under his own power, grabs his carry on and walks off the plane with them, seemingly perfectly fine, which was the strange thing. 

Then the plane takes off with no mention of what happened. 

Totally eary..

I work for an investment manager uptown.  My company has cancelled all travel and sends out communiques every few days.

Sorry if someone already said it, but I think more than the death rate, it's about disruption.  If 50% of my office calls in sick <multiplied by every other company in the area, US, the world>, then productivity grinds to a halt.  Whether people are dying or not is not the issue.  If all that productivity grinds to a halt, then we will enter into a major recession/depression. 

It's better to take true preemptive measures, even if overdone, to prevent that from happening.
