Joe Brady is being underhyped

Recommended Posts

As bad as everyone thinks we will be, Joe Brady is being very undervalued on how much he is going to improve our offense. The offensive line probably won't be top ten, but I can easily see it moving up to anywhere from 18-11 in the league. Playcalling will be more innovative and less predictable, thus teams can't have as many players in the box as they could under Norv and Shula. Ron's offenses played like everyone suspected, play to get the defense rest and only score when needed, this ultimately took years off Cam's career.

For almost ten years, Cam has been forced to play under mediocre play calling and we have shined despite it. Cam had the Panthers offense #1 in the league with Mike Shula playcalling and Ted Ginn as our #1 receiver. Anyone in early 2018 remembers while we were on this board celebrating us FINALLY firing Shula, Vikings fans we're warning us about how bad Norv was. He did the same thing in Minnesota that he did here, it didn't work.

Why is Norv receiving ZERO blame for Cam Newton's performance? 10/10 of us can agree that Cam's performance in 17,18,19 was affected by injury, but is it not the play callers job to play to Cam's strengths when his passing is weak? Truly, New Orleans in 2018 is the only game I can point to Cam's arm was truly gone, he needed to be able to use his legs to open the passing game up enough for him to make throws with weaker throwing ability.

One of the biggest misconceptions that I think the media and some of us have in our head is Cam was Cam was hurt in 2017 and not 2016. Cam had the same injury, I have been watching games from 2014-2018 every night.

BUF: Cam 5 rushes for 27 yards (some were scrambles) 9 total points.

Saints: Cam 3 rushes 16 yards, 13 points in 34-13 Loss

NE: Cam 8 Rushes 44 yards 1 td.

Cam ended up being our leading rusher

One thing that stuck out to me in that season was the Minnesota Vikings game... The Panthers gave up a large lead and we're discouraged, a long designed run by Cam Newton puts us in a position for us to win that game... That never happens under Norv. Shula is what he is, but he recognized Cam was getting killed in the pocket and adjusted, Norv insisted ( I don't feel like pulling out press conferences but he kept bragging about Cam's completion percentage) that Cam WOULD be a pocket passer no matter how many games we lost.

Fast forward to this past year, everyone is screaming at us running CMC over Cam with the game at 4th and short and the game on the line. If the reason Cam wasn't running was because he was hurt, why was he allowed to run a designed run in the 1st qtr where he picked up the 1st down, but the refs claimed they couldn't overturn it due to the rain delay that came after.  Why did we time after time run play action (lazily) and option if we were never going to let Cam (or even CMC on occasion) run to where the defenders would bite in.

A lot of pressure is put on an offensive line with predictable play calling, just watch Tampa Bay in that game time after time ignore play action or option... Fans in the stands next to me we're predicting our play calls.

If I could sit down with Ron and Norv, I'd ask one question... Why did you two feel that 33 to as many as 50 throws in one game would be better then letting him have 8-10 runs like you did in 2017 for a QB suffering through a rotator cuff injury that you openly admitted was using throw counts in practice. 8-10 runs designed doesn't equal 8-10 hits, many time Cam is able to slide and not get hit on the run, but it sure didn't matter when Cam was getting sacked 5-10 times in Pittsburgh when he was left in down 45 points... In my opinion, Ron's last press conference showed who #1 is... no apologies to Cam for how he treated his rehab, just me me me.

Ultimately, I don't think our roster that year is honestly much worse then the one we have now. Joe Brady's playcalling can only improve an offense that only lost Greg Olsen who hasn't been performing as it has in the past. I truly think DJ, CMC, Cam can get this team where it belongs, top 10 in offense.

With a good free agency on defense and drafting the right pieces, I see no reason this year cannot be a bounce back year for Cam Newton. Do I think we're super bowl contenders? No, but I think we can get at 7th playoff spot in the event the CBA extends it, or even the possibility of a 2014 type season where the division is winnable, I think father time catches Brees this year.

The Kansas City Chiefs: 18th in the league in total defense. Defense wins championships is now a false statement.

Dude is pretty unproven as a big league coordinator and Cam hasn't been healthy in 5 years.

I'm cautiously optimistic but Norv really wasn't a problem. He had a few bad situational calls here and there but nowhere near as terrible as Shula consistently did. The biggest problem was far and away Cam's health.

Also, that statement about defense not winning championships is just flat out misleading. KC showed marked improvement from the first half of the year to the second half of the year. Second half of the year they were a top defensive unit in the league. Of course it helps to have the best QB in the game under center, but the defense played much better down the stretch than they did at the beginning of the season once spags got his personnel down.

Well stated. It would have been interesting to see what Brady's offense would have done in year 2 in the SEC. We all should be cautiously optimistic. But please keep in mind the sample size is VERY small.

Thats why going defense in the draft seems like a waste. Score some points. Dixtate the game with offense

We're going to have to do something to field a defense. Right now we only have two DTs under contract and it's widely speculated that we'll release Poe, so that leaves one and he's 30+ coming off of a season ending injury (Poe fits that description too for what it's worth).

Ummm.... No!

The Average defensive ranking of the eventual super winner is 6.8 (Seventh)
The top ranked defense has reached the super bowl 11 times and is 8-3
The team that has allowed the fewest points has reach the super bowl 18 time and is 13-5

On the offense:
The top ranked offense has reached the super bowl 14 times and is 8-6
The scoring team reached the super bowl 21 times and is 10-11
Only 4 of the 47 super bowl winners featured the leading rusher

I expect Brady to use creativity and hope to god he works with CMC in the slot and he get another RB option to switch up hand-offs. I also expect him to call better plays designed for Cam than Rivera or Shula ever had the capability to do.

My worry is the offensive line. The team hasn’t neglected it, in fact quite the opposite. However the attempts to address it have consistently beeb failures (Kalil, Williams, Paradis etc.) which is even worse than neglecting it because you’re wasting resources.

Scheme and QB don’t really matter when you consistently fug up the offensive line and have absolutely nothing to build on.

The only two qbs during the Cam era besides Cam I have been able to see preform at a high level for more than a fluke season with just as bad if not worse oline are Wilson (a more superior talent) and Luck (whose career is now done thanks to being pounded in the ground). That’s very poor odds.

Historical data isn't necessarily relevant when the NFL is bending over backwards to create a pass happy high scoring league because that's what the average casual fan wants to see. Last year, only one top 10 defense was left standing after the wild card round of the playoffs. Hell, only three of them made the playoffs at all. Every defense in the final four was ranked #14 or worse and the SB featured the #19 and #21 overall defenses.

Fast forward to this year and only half of the top 10 defenses made the playoffs. Only one was left standing after the wild card round. The SB winner was ranked #17.

So we have two consecutive years of only one top 10 defense left standing after the wild card round.

When New Orleans had a crappy defense they scored tons of points but had 3 7-9 seasons in a row. They focus on defense and suddenly start winning the division and had winning seasons.

Total yards means little which is how they are usually ranked. The difference between a top 10 defense and number 20 is usually about 50 yards or 1 drive. But I suspect without doing the analysis that how many points you surrender is a better indicator of your defense than total yards.

Total yards means a lot. There's almost always a very strong correlation between yards allowed and points allowed.

    • Here comes Frankw and his pathetic little persecution complex to claim I have a personal vendetta against one of the worst performing coaches in the league if anything I should love Canales because he’s walking proof that through the lord all things AREN'T possible.  This kind of performance is exactly what you’d expect from someone who filled the building with misunderstood Bible quotes about iron forging iron and inspired speeches about how he apologized for his infidelity by buying his wife a book deal.  once more into the breech dear friends, just like when I paid a stripper for an above the pants hand job in Orlando.
    • As dumb as it probably sounds, we should have won that game.  Defense was bad but Bryce should have been better.  Pass rush isn't a good enough excuse.
    • You and I both know there isn't a coach we could or can still hire that can "fix" Bryce Young. Even at mighty Alabama with one of the best modern coaches in college football history Mac Jones was still a better QB than Bryce Young. Mac Jones.... We already know how you feel about Canales on a personal level so in that regard you wanting him fired is not news. You don't have to disguise it behind this shroud of rabble about not fixing Bryce Young. To his credit he somehow had us competive against the Chiefs and the Eagles on the road with #9. But no coaching staff can overcome their starting QB turning the ball over 4 times. We definitely have developed some of our younger offensive pieces. And as far as Evero goes he has earned criticism and if he's fired so be it but in his defense many of us said in the offseason this defensive roster was a disaster waiting to happen given the resources we spent on the offense while neglecting the defense. That was Dan Morgan's plan. He swung too hard toward offense to salvage the Bryce Young trade. That's on him. We can scream about XL all we want but at least he's actually been on the field for the most part. The Brooks pick was a luxury pick at the time and now it is a Hurney level blunder. Dan Morgan has gotten a lot of early praise here when in reality he's unequivocally deserving of significant criticism. But if you say that some people get up in arms because he's a former Panther. Big whoop. He has just as much to prove this upcoming season as Canales. That's why to me in my own personal opinion I say one more season and then if it's more of the same say goodbye to both.
