Glorified third QB option. We can do better at QB2. Still won't stop the F150 crowd from revving up their engines in excitement.

I think if one takes a objective look at the backup qb's around the league, its hard to say we can do better.   At least not easily or cheaply.   Allen is young, cheap, helped us win a few games this year, with shots at winning others (green bay, new orleans).  Despite being saddled with bad oline play and the worst run defense in the NFL.   In reality, that is about all one can expect from the backup qb in most cases.

I do think that if we get to a position that we feel we have a real sb contender, it might be a good idea to invest in a better backup option, as the saints did with Bridgewater.  But if you look around the league, the vast majority of backup qb's are backups for a reason.  So at least for now, I think we stick with Allen as the backup.

So are we going to carry 3 qb's on the roster again?  I get that KA is cheap but I wonder what this means for Grier?

Grier looked unbelievably terrible. Bring him to camp and give him a chance to compete, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he doesn't make the final roster. O wouldn't be surprised if we spend a late round pick and/or bring in a lower level FA to compete either. I hope we only carry two active QBs but with Cam's injury concerns we need one on the PS in waiting too. That PS QB could potentially be Grier.

allen isn't terrible.  i thought he was pretty good at first.  the pouting defeatism he showed as the season wore on is something that concerns me about his makeup.    i think a lot of qb's could be better with good coaching, but can you coach what we saw out of him in that regard, or make him good enough where the issue doesn't come up?   cam has some of that too, but his talent level is just so much more than allens it really isn't that big of a deal, and cam has shown he can put it behind him in the 4th qtr.   i don't know if allen can ever do that.  if cam is ok it doesn't really matter.  if not i think grier has a better shot at landing us a high pick next year.

The boy took a beating with the first Atlanta game.  Like the line gave up blocking for him.  That was not all on him.  Take a look at the GB and the First NO game.  The boy was beaten but kept us in the games until the last plays and took on two of the best QB's in the NFC in Rogers and Breeze.  You give him some good coaching and get a decent line to protect for him and he would have won more than 5 games last year.

Please stop & remember. Allen was an UDFA & showed improvement both years as a Panther. Quality backup? Probably. Emergency starter? Possibly. Starter? Not now and maybe not ever but maybe in a year or two. IMO. Before the 2019 draft, Tepper  stated that he  wanted to draft D-line, O-line, & backup QB. Right or wrong, Hurley did as he was told. [Boss may not be right but is never WRONG]. Grier was possibly the best QB available at his draft spot [debatable but now spilled milk]. Hopefully Grier can show enough [along with Allen] & either or both can be worth extra picks in the later rounds. IMO

i don't get this.  he said nice things about grier before that game as any coach would and should.  that's really it.   pre-game fluff.  i've never heard a coach say 'well their qb sucks so that's good'

Think there are remarks he made about Grier around NFL draft time too.

But it could be a product of him trying to deflect from how bad his defense was abused.  Praising Grier as one of the best in college is also a defense of why he defense got torched.

Typically backups dont get 8 starts...

This is the issue.

As a backup in the NFL, the job is to come in and keep the wheels on the offense of a couple of series, a few quarters, or even a few starts.  Like maybe 3 or 4 starts.  But, almost any team in the league that loses its starter in game 2 is searching for a new starter on the waiver wire, because their backup is not cut out for that.

News flash: neither was our backup.

Allen did very well for the role a backup is expected to play.  He faltered when he was asked to become a starting QB.  Since he is not a starting QB, nor is he paid like one, nor should he be expected to be one, this seems like an okay move.
