Not talking about competing to be a starter, just competing for a roster spot.

As to Grier, it's not so much my opinion that's in question as it is Matt Rhule's.

The front office might have a say as well.

I would think that if Ruhle watches any film from last year, it would be slam dunk keeping Allen over Grier as the backup.  Even with our horrible performances over the last 6 games, Allen looked like he had the potentiall to be a decent backup, while Grier looked like he will soon be the guy who got to play a couple of games in the NFL before he gets stated on whatever his career will be.

Rhule has been said to like Grier in part because of his stellar performance against Baylor two years ago.

And of course, there are always coaches who see a player underperforming and think "if we just work with that guy, he could be a lot better".

Like I've been saying, Rhule is a real wild card right now.  You might as well call the Psychic Friends Network (if they've come out of bankruptcy yet).

Is there no one else in pro football better than this guy?

is the point not to improve the roster?

Every NFL team has several guys at the bottom of the roster that are probably only there because...well, they're ours.

Meh, he is not going to say bad things about him.  His words in this case probably don't mean much at this point.

Welp, I was wrong about this one. I assumed that they would have already signed him if they wanted to keep him since many teams had signed their ERFAs and there’s zero contract complications and they don’t come any cheaper.

Not going so much off of his words as speculation from Insiders. Mind you, that could be wrong too.

It's basically one of those "back of my mind" things.

This team has never had a coaching staff that really develops backup QBs, I'd argue starting ones either. Maybe Allen can be a decent QB backup. Maybe Grier can do more than start for the Charlotte Thunder. Too soon to tell, but if our oline continues to suck, it won't matter who is back there.

To be fair, Rhule was referring to Grier's play while at West Virginia.  I'm pretty sure he's not of the same opinion now if he's seen last year's tape.
