Evaluation?

Literally no downside besides potentially holding a roster position for someone they covet more.  Money, contract length, options...none of that is on the table.  It's about as straight for of a deal as there can be.

On the flip side the team had up until the deadline, so they really didn't have to do it any sooner.

I tend to go with "we are looking for a better option but couldn't come up with one so let's just stick with what we have for now" as the reason.

At this point, it's hard to say.

Said it earlier: We really don't know that much about Matt Rhule at this point.

This moves makes a lot of sense. He'll probably be running with the 1s in OTAs and mincamp while Cam is still rehabbing.

Assuming they don't pick up anyone else.

At this point, I wouldn't even try to make a prediction.

My assumption now is based on Cam being un-tradable. I don't think carrying a Bridgewater/Tannehill at $25M and Cam at $19M makes sense. Unless Cam gets released which is always a possibility (no matter how small).

It's not so much money as length.

Newton is under contract only for 2020. Even assuming that plays out, there's no indication (yet, anyway) that the team plans to stick with him beyond that.

If they sign a free agent, you've gotta expect that's probably a three-year contract.

We'll find out in about a week. The moves they make in free agency will tell a lot.

I'm not so sure this question gets resolved that quickly.

Ian Rapoport stated it's believed that Newton might not be able to pass a physical until June or later. Jourdan Rodrigue has twice said that the team believes he could pass a physical very soon.

Who knows?

I'd probably take him to camp and let him compete, at least.

As I recall, there's a deadline for when Restricted and Exclusive Rights players have to be tendered, and if they're not by then they become Unrestricted Free Agents. I don't remember when that is but it would be kind of relevant to the discussion.

If you think we should keep him over Will Grier, then I most strongly disagree.

He shouldn't start, but as backup's go, he has a good chance to become adequate.

If they sign a Bridgewater or Mariota I think it would tell a lot.

Not talking about competing to be a starter, just competing for a roster spot.

As to Grier, it's not so much my opinion that's in question as it is Matt Rhule's.

Valid point.

Think I saw something that said the Raiders were interested in Mariota. I know they've been talking up Derek Carr but that doesn't really mean anything.
