No, they could offer a longer contract.

There's no great driving reason to do so.

Exclusive rights free agent (ERFA): Any player with fewer than three accrued seasons and an expired contract. If his original team offers him a one-year contract and the league minimum (based on his credited seasons), the player cannot negotiate with other teams.

If we cut Will Grier after only one season, every thread with huddlers clamoring for us to draft him should be bumped, and they should be thoroughly embarrassed.

Will Grier was a disaster and resigning Allen is proof of that. No clue why we thought a guy who was a ok system QB was going to do anything in the NFL. Jimmy Clausen was more pro ready.

That's talking about a tender offer. The flipside would be that if they offered him nothing, he'd become a true free agent.

Nothing in that language prevents them from offering something longer if they should choose. Again, there was just no reason to.

Anybody vouching for Grier before the draft was delusional. I hated the idea of drafting a guy who was supposed to be a Heisman candidate and first pick going into his senior year but he played so bad against wet tissue Big 12 defenses that his stock dropped to a middling day 3 pick. The team panicked when reports about NE wanting Grier came out and we wanted a “feel good” story about a hometown kid who’s related to some Vine/YT guy so we reached for him.
