Man when we sign someone that don't line up with those that want a ''cheaper FA"' I'm a ctfu. You talk about over-paying Butler, almost any market FA is overpaid, unless we scrape the bottom of the barrel.

Star - 10M a season to eat up space

Poe - 9M a season to eat up space

If Butlers 2.1M is the ceiling it's gonna be some hurt feelings, in a few weeks.

Where do you get 2.1 m? This thread is about re signing Butler. Would you rather overpay someone for 5 years and hope he continues to aspire to mediocrity and stuck paying him instead of the flexibility of someone else or for only 1 know you’ll get mediocrity play maybe more and can possibly find a replacement year after year?

Butler is going to want close to 10 a year with 6-7 guaranteed 5 year deal for one good season. Has never offered elite play. And as a high draft prospect he has all the potential. Which means he likely lacks work ethic. I’ll let character issues slide.

McCoy was paid 10 mil this season with only 4 million guaranteed.

Their stats are almost identical. But McCoy has a history with elite play and there was a chance he would have done better. But you KNEW he was going to at least do OK.

I’ll take option B.

Need his gritty attitude on the line. Everyone else was checked out and Butler was giving it his all and still emotionally invested into the season.

Yeah but that was only because it was a contract year.  If he ever get paid he would become the invisible man like his first 3 years.

If he would take a one year prove it deal, sure. A warm body is a warm body and it would be fun to see what the new staff would do with him and how he responds. Free Agency is too damn expensive for what you typically get and I am less than enthused about Hurney making FA contracts that can't be broken next offseason if they Poe/Paridis the place up.

The 2.1 was his salary last season per spotrac

Gerald McCoy was 3M base, 4M signing bonus, and 1M roster bonus -- totaled 8M -- courtesy of spotract

I think you and that NC guy are missing everyone's points:

1) If the price is reasonable it makes sense to re-sign him which would be cheaper than the 5th yr

2) He doesn't hurt the comp pick formula

3) He's 25 and has shown he ''CAN'' play at a relatively high level

No on here is under the assumption that the market may over-pay him, those with good sense are simply saying he is worth an extension at a reasonable cost. All the names on the list below aside from the bottom feeders are going to require respectable money -- https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/all/defensive-tackle/

I believe someone in here mentioned DJ Reader as an option, he's coming off the same salary floor as Butler, and will likely command as much or more in the market -- https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/houston-texans/dj-reader-19120/

Jordan Philips has an estimated market value of 6.1M annually, and he is 27 coming off a 10 sack campaign for a playoff team - https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/jordan-phillips-16776/market-value/

He's probably the closest FA comp to Butler for the sake of argument, so it'll be interesting to see how the market treats these two.

$2.1M was on his rookie deal and only contract.  There is NO way he's going to ask for rookie contract money, ZERO.  Now if the market won't bear much higher than that, it is one thing.  But to assume that Butler is content on making $2M a year is ludicrous.

With Marty's penchant to overpay, the bidding is going to start high to begin with, especially if he wants to lock him up before testing FA.  I don't get the rationale that we keep Butler because other FAs may want as much money.  What????  So you throw money at a player because you might have to spend as much if you let them walk and get another player in FA even though the bottom half of FA DTs this year can no where demand that kind of money.  That is some Marty Hurney logic right there.

Id sign nearly anyone for the right price. Vern was another enigma, owned the practices sessions and was a ghost on game-day. They tired everything to fix that, nothing worked. He has all the size and numbers you want in a DT, other large teammates called him big vern. Its always a giant red flag when soon-to-be free agents have the their best year by far.

What happened to everyone hoping for a complete rebuild/tank?  Some even going as far as to say that we should trade CMC.  Now people are debating whether we should re-sign Butler to a short contract based off of one good year in his contract year, when there's a decent chance we could get a 3rd or 4th round compensatory pick for him instead?  Seems like the compensatory pick is way more helpful in a rebuild, no?  I can't keep up with the impressionable ever-changing moodiness in here.

Questionable character and all of a sudden ‘it clicks’ during a contract year. And ONLY his contract year.

Other than having the fan favorite title, resigning him is the epitome of what is wrong with this organization.

Constantly signing players to big contracts after a good contract year where somehow it ‘clicks’ at just the right financial time. No love for the game. And so you end up with the whole ‘paying a player for their past’. The Panthers mantra.

Not only does this tell players they’ll be paid if the preform at the right time, and tell that we have serious depth and talent evaluation issues for this not to be a problem. But worst of all it tells everyone mediocrity and low work ethics is acceptable from a high round, high potential draft pick.

No fuging thank you. Let’s have higher standards. He can GTFO.

I don't mind new guys at all. This rebuild everybody is talking about happens every season and the tank already happened.

THE ONLY reason Butler got playing time last year is because everybody was injured until it was only him and Gerald. He stepped up to the challenge. We never asked him to do that or be that. He got his opportunity, finally, and manned up. Drawing two blockers in the NFL is worth money. Yes he will get it regardless of where he is.

At his age and perceived upside I'd say he'll get a good/great offer from the Panthers. He may want out, don't know but we need multiple guys at that position and KK is getting longer in the tooth while Butler is still young athletic and not undersized.

Him combing back would have to make a lot of sense financially. He is still young but he reeks of another Kony Ealy, his drive doesn’t seem to be consistent. I would love to have him back for depth team friendly deal to see if he can finally get it together but I can’t see that happening honestly.
