Matt Miller: many sources around league believe Panthers will attempt to "tank" for Trevor Lawrence

I expect a mid-level DE signing. Maybe a Carl Nassib type. We need a LDE opposite Burns and he needs to be someone who can anchor the point of attack. Nassib fits the bill IMO.

We definitely need a base end.

Question though--Are we expecting Burns to have his hands in the dirt? I imagine a mix with him at EDGE in 3-4 looks?  Have they mentioned what defense they're looking to run?

I still think Haynes and Miller could have substantial roles but the scheme will need to work with their player-types.

Pretty sure both Rhule and Snow have always been 4-3 guys. I'm curious to see how they handle our young pass rushers. I think Burns can play RDE. I'm less certain about Haynes and Miller. They'll probably be relegated to situational pass rushers type roles. If that's the case, one of them probably isn't on the final roster. Not sure you can afford to carry two situational pass rushers. In that scenario it might come down to special teams on who sticks.

Fake news. Sports journalism is garbage.

Journalism in general is awful, and there are a lot of factors that contribute to that, but sports journalism is probably the worst it’s ever been. It’s about chasing clicks and self promotion.

Does anyone on here still care about B/R after that poo show article about The Golden Calf of Bristol outlasting Cam and if he’s wrong he’d wear a Cam Jersey next time they’re Carolina is Tampa? Is that the same website we’re putting time and effort into today?

He has the HS pedigree but I try not to get too involved in "anointing" a QB after one season, even as impressive as his was. If he improves, he might be able to be that top pick, if he does not, I would expect to see him start to drop rather quickly. One thing working against him(NFL stock wise) is that he doesn't have have ideal size for the kind of QB that he is. He doesn't have the advantage of being an elite athlete as a shorter QB, so he will need to be an exceptional passer to not get that handicap.

Clemson just seemed to be on autopilot in that game. Honestly, they were really not terribly impressive until after that UNC game. They seemed to be going through the motions for the early part of the year and that close call really seemed to give them focus. I like Howell as a QB, I just don't think he is anywhere near the caliber of prospect that Lawrence is. The thing is for Trevor that when you start ticking off all the boxes for ideal QB, he checks most of them. He's one of the best QB prospects I have seen in a while.

We’ve seen the size argument get debunked before. Some guys do more with less.

Yeah but usually those guys are either elite athletes or high accuracy guys. Howell will have to show that(likely the latter) to erase that stigma. It does still exist.

Dolphins are a good example. They are rebuilding, which led to trading away their old players for draft picks. However they started Fitzpatrick to win games because no franchise/coach wants to intentionally lose. College players are always a gamble. Imagine if a team tanked for Ryan Leaf, or Jamarcus Russell...

Exactly. Nothing is a sure thing in the NFL. Especially young QBs that have a ton of hype surrounding them while still in college. Neither Lawerence nor Fields has taken an NFL snap and purposely mortgaging your future by trading up or losing on purpose you end up looking like the Redskins when they took RG3

Why would the Panthers let it be known they're tanking? Why would even be a talked about strategy? If they're tanking it's just going to be acquiring assets. Trying to actively "tank", lose games, isn't something that really happens in the NFL, and when you do you often find yourself playing your way out of the pick as it's always a case of any given Sunday.

I'll believe it when Christian Mccaffrey is traded. Trai Turner being traded straight up for Okung isn't anything other than a smart gamble in my opinion.

I agree with everything but the last sentence, however I'm not going to argue it.

Plus, Matt Miller's "sources" I doubt. He's not an nfl insider, he's a draft scout. Sure he probably knows a lot of people but unless someone who continually breaks news is spouting something my first inclination is always skepticism.

    • Go look at the receiving stats from the TEs around that time period. they weren’t airing it out like today.  If he played in todays game where guys are attempting 40 passing  vs 25 back then when they were more focused on RBs and the run game.   There is a reason he was 1st team all-pro
    • You know, I'm torn on how to do this post, so I'll go with both options. Up first: We've done it! And second: Are you coping well enough? Now on to the rest of the post. We've successfully moved at least some of mrcompletely11's disdain and hatred from to the idea of Warren at #8. Take a bow fellas
    • Yes his size is impressive and he looks solid which is good. He doesn't look like a freak and the NFL has tons of freaks.  I don't care about the games. I just look at the film. Being the best player at Penn state means nothing in the NFL, it's just supporting info in the draft process. If he isn't going to be playing for for CFB coaches and agaisnt CFB players it's a moot point. He is big and he should be good in the NFL but comparing him to Bowers or saying he is a better prospect is not something I can agree with from what I have seen.
