Matt Miller: many sources around league believe Panthers will attempt to "tank" for Trevor Lawrence

Lawrence has some pretty elite ball placement, seems to be a better arm talent and it quite a bit more mobile. Howell is clearly talented but IMO, Lawrence is very clearly the better prospect at the moment. It will be interesting to see Howell moving forward. I'd like to see him become a lot more accurate with the ball. That's one area what Lawrence has excelled at even as a freshman and being an accurate passer in college has been a strong predictor of being an accurate NFL passer.

The statistics are sort of irrelevant, IMO. College stats are not a strong predictor of NFL results. Additionally, while Lawrence benefited from superior talent, Howell actually benefited statistically from his team being so terrible. Lawrence was taking his foot off the gas in the 4th quarter of a few of those games, whereas Howell was fighting for wins and still airing it out. So, I'd say that kind of evens out over the course of a season.

If Howell is able to improve and maintain that kind of production in college, he'll definitely be a first round QB and possibly a top 10 guy.

Not disagreeing with your thought process. Keep in mind too that UNC was the only team during the regular season to keep a competitive pace with Clemson. Sam was a huge part of that. Dude has that “it” factor.

Howell is already the top rated QB for the 2022 draft. If he keeps getting better over the next two seasons he will be the top pick.

He has the HS pedigree but I try not to get too involved in "anointing" a QB after one season, even as impressive as his was. If he improves, he might be able to be that top pick, if he does not, I would expect to see him start to drop rather quickly. One thing working against him(NFL stock wise) is that he doesn't have have ideal size for the kind of QB that he is. He doesn't have the advantage of being an elite athlete as a shorter QB, so he will need to be an exceptional passer to not get that handicap.

Clemson just seemed to be on autopilot in that game. Honestly, they were really not terribly impressive until after that UNC game. They seemed to be going through the motions for the early part of the year and that close call really seemed to give them focus. I like Howell as a QB, I just don't think he is anywhere near the caliber of prospect that Lawrence is. The thing is for Trevor that when you start ticking off all the boxes for ideal QB, he checks most of them. He's one of the best QB prospects I have seen in a while.

I will hold my thoughts until the draft and FA are both over.  It will be abundantly clear by then if the team is actively trying to build a competitive team this year or tread water until 2021 and then begin in earnest.

I think that is the most difficult thing to ascertain at this juncture, what direction we are moving in. Keeping Cam? Doesn't seem like a rebuild. Trading for Okung? Doesn't seem like a rebuild. Letting Bradberry walk? Seems like a rebuild. Letting Addison walk? Seems like a rebuild.

Lots of conflicting signals.

Agreed at this juncture, but to me at least, by how they draft and what FAs they get...or even attempt to get will say a lot about what to expect out the coming season.  I have a Hurney bullsh*t sensor, so if he's tanking, I'll sniff it out.  Marty will use smoke and mirrors so it won't be plainly obvious to the casual fan, but I'm fairly certain it'll be obvious to me.

The Okung deal was about dumping Trai's contract as much as it was creating some flexibility regarding LT in the draft.  Without Okung, LT was pretty much a given and early, now it's still a possibility, but not a given and can wait until the mid-rounds.

Bradberry is asking more than we are willing to pay, period.   That one is pretty simple to me.  Bradberry is part of the plan, but the contract he wants definitely isn't.  We may just have to move forward without him.

I really want to see our movement(or lack thereof) in free agency. I think that might be the clearest indicator of what we plan on doing. I have been happy with most of the moves so far.

I don't expect much.  With the hit due to the Okung signing, that takes away almost $10 mil more spending room in 2020.  It will balance out cutting Poe.  Factor in the draft class and we're probably going to have around $20-25 million to spend towards 10-14 legit holes on the 53.  I think we may look at one decent FA building block signing but the money is going to need to be spread for signings to fill the roster.

I think this year will be finding the draftees that are building blocks for Rhule and maybe 1 FA signing that could be long term.

I expect a mid-level DE signing. Maybe a Carl Nassib type. We need a LDE opposite Burns and he needs to be someone who can anchor the point of attack. Nassib fits the bill IMO.
