I would've felt a lot better about Brown if he worked on improving that 3-cone and re-ran it. I'm not a huge "40-time" or bench press guy, but 3-cone is a pretty telling stat at overall athleticism.

Wonder how kk did on that drill....or Star

gotta say I felt the same way

I’d feel a lot better if Hurney were no where near this rebuild. Been seeing the fruits of that clown’s work since after the Siefert disaster. As bad as George was, he did hit on some great picks in his final draft

We all get our rocks off on combine drills, but the tape is really what matters

If theres one drill above all, its the 3-cone. Brown had the worst one for a "top-pick" in the history of testing. 3rd worst out of the 300 players there, thats one giant issue for me. Not going to lie, I normally laugh about dropping a player for combine stuff(drill related), but that sure did make turn cold on Brown at #7. Heres the other deal, he either has no 3-cone ability or didnt train for it. I mean at first you dont want your favorite player to blow away the combine, cause they will be gone before you pick. Also you dont want them fail so bad that the player is there in the next round.

Tape does trump all combine and Browns tape is by far the best against the best SEC talent. Nearly ALL that SEC talent also said he was the hardest player to block. Honestly I want to see how many PEDs tests he has passed. SEC OL-man are strong, but the NFL is just on another level. Brown will not bully NFL like he did in the SEC, thats where you need a great 3-cone to aid the hard knock of overcoming the difference in strength.

I agree.  Even the guys on WFNZ were railing on this today. Who is advising this kid?   Him not running that 3 cone again does not bode well in my book.
They were talking about how on tape he wins with power only.  And that isn’t gonna work consistently in the NFL. And at 7 that’s not the player you draft.
I was high on him in the beginning.  But not so much right now.

So.many fans have no concept on how to judge combine results.

If a player does unexpectedly well, then that should lead the coaches and scouts back to the tape, to see if the players ability shows up on tape.

They don't get to concerned when a player doesn't rock out a combine work out, when his tape is consistently good.

He has top 5 tape and round 5 combine. You dont draft players with that combine in the top ten, the odds are hes going to bust. Even if you dont care about 3 cone, his others drills are very poor too.

Quote

His 8.22 3-cone placed in the third -- yes, third -- percentile among defensive tackles. His vertical? 22nd percentile at the position. His broad jump was a respectable but far from super-impressive 66th percentile. His short shuttle time of 4.79 -- 18th percentile. Ndamukong Suh -- a trendy comparison for the Auburn star -- was light years more athletic than Brown when he tested at the combine in 2010.

This guy does in independent studies-https://www.draft32.com/how-much-do-pass-rusher-40-times-ma

I have always placed value on 3-cone times for pass rushers.  This research speaks for itself.

Let's take a look at the top 20 Edge Rushers and their 3-cone times.

1. Khalil Mack: 7.08

2. Von Miller: 6.70

3. T.J. Watt:6.79

4. Cameron Jordan: 7.07

5. Myles Garrett: N/A

5. Danielle Hunter: 6.95

7. Joey Bosa: 6.89

8. Nick Bosa: 7.10

9. Chandler Jones: 7.07

10. ZaDarius Smith: 7.42

11. Demarcus Lawrence: 7.46

12. Jadeveon Clowney: 7.27

13. Shaquil Barrett: 6.90

14. Robert Quinn: 7.13

15. Preston Smith: 7.07

16. Justin Houston: 6.95

17. Frank Clark: 7.08

18. Dee Ford: 7.06

19. Bradley Chubb: 7.37

20. Yannick Ngakoue: 7.35

Best Pass Rushing DTs:

Aaron Donald: 7.11

Fletcher Cox: 7.07

Calais Campbell: 7.45 (at 290 pounds)

Chris Jones: 7.44

Grady Jarrett: 7.37

J.J. Watt: 6.88

And here are the busts/underwhelming EDGE defenders drafted in the first 2 rounds since 2012:

Breeland Speaks: 7.63

Uchenna Nwosu: 7.05 at pro day

Kemoko Turay: N/A

Tyquan Lewis: 7.20

Charles Harris: 7.47

Taco Charlton: 7.17

Kevin Dodd: 7.32

Noah Spence: 7.21

Kamalei Correa: 6.78

Jihad Ward: 7.38

Hau'oli Kikaka: 7.13

Nate Orchard: 7.28

Dion Jordan: 7.02

Barkevious Mingo: 6.84

Bjoern Warner: 7.30

Tank Carradine: N/A

Quinton Coples: 7.57

Shea McClellin: 7.07

Courtney Upshaw: N/A

Andre Branch: 7.19

Quick Notes:

- WOW.  The evidence could not be more clear.  Since 2012, just 2 pass rushers drafted in the first 2 rounds have busted with a sub-7.0 3-cone time.  Add just 3 more when you bring the threshold to 7.19.  So 75% of all pass rusher busts had a 3-cone time of 7.19 or slower.

- Quentin Coples to NYJ... ouch.

- 14 of the top 20 pass rushers in the NFL timed 7.10 or faster in the 3-cone.  2 of the 6 who were slower were the 19th and 20th ranked in my subjective rankings.  Both could be replaced.

- All of the interior pass rushers listed were in the 84th percentile or higher at their position for 3-cone time.  Cox, Watt, and Donald, probably the top 3 interior pass rushers of our generation, were all in the 95th percentile or higher among DTs in 3-cone time.

- The second round seemed to be a sweet spot for WRs and RBs.  The second round since 2012 has featured a ton of busts at pass rusher.

- None of this bodes well for Seahawks 2019 first-round pick L.J. Collier, who timed at 7.71.  If you want to laugh, go look at how the Seahawks have used their first-round picks since 2012.

In conclusion, this research was staggering.  I would be very hesitant to draft an edge rusher with a substandard 3-cone time.  I have not studied the data of this year's class or scouted all the edge rushers yet (and I know some will only run at their pro days), but I am looking forward to it.

After the top 3 WRs&OTs, I dont want Brown at 15. I dont like drafting DBs or LBs at 7, but Simmons is my guy currently.
