Thoughts on Cam and the rebuild

Seems like every week there is another report about weather or not we are keeping Cam, or if we are rebuilding.  Personably I try to ignore most things you hear in the media, more times or not its just coach speak or a smokescreen, also players say what might benefit them the most, which they should.

I have no inside sources, but I think it is pretty easy to get infer what is probably going on.

Here is what we can logically guess:

Cam probably wants an extension.  He has every right to and If I was him I was him I would also.

The team probably doesn't want to give him an extension.  Based on injury history this is logical also.  I really can't blame them either.

If Cam doesn't want to play under a one year contract the team could start to listen to offers for trades.  Very logical to do so.  Even though Cam is under contract for one more year he can push the issue to not be here.  I doubt anyone wants that.  The team doesn't want that drama and Cam probably doesn't either.

Also there is a good chance the team has told Cam to look at trades also.  The player and his people can pursue them also.  In some ways the team can be doing Cam a favor by not pushing him to play on a one year deal.

Everything above I think is very likely, the questions becomes if the team has intentions of releasing him if no trade presents himself or even trading him for very little in return.

Personally that doesn't make sense to me.  If you keep him for another year and let him walk then you at least potentially get a third round comp pick for him.  $19m in cap savings is a decent amount but quality QBs are so hard to find, I would spend that to see if my former elite QB can return to form.  The only way it makes sense is if you are determined to do a full blown rebuild and you are actually afraid he might make your team average or better. Basically if you are hoping for Trevor next year.  Personally I don't like tanking for the top pick because their is too much parity in the league.  Look at the dolphins, they tried to tank and ended up 5th.

If Cam is healthy and willing to play on a year deal I think he is our QB unless we get a really good trade offer.  Either way I think we are going to do somewhat of a rebuild, or at least a reset.  I don't see us overpaying players just to make a run this year.  If you are thought your team was close you might be willing to pay a good player great money but I don't see us doing that. If Cam stays I could see us adding players but it will be value plays.  For example maybe they think CMC is worth the money, but Bradberry isn't.  If the team was more of a contender you might be willing to overpay (in your mind) a player.

If Cam isn't here though it might lean more to a "rebuild" which is totally understandable.

Basically if Cam is willing to play on a one year deal it’s doing to take a pretty good trade package to move on from him, if he pushes it they might let him go for less.

Here is where the timing is off in this entire episode.  If you let him walk then you basically wasted an entire year of your franchise rebuild just to see if he can play.  That doesnt make sense.  At all.  He is going to want a new deal with whoever and that is going to be pricey.  Tepper has already said that limits things organizationally.  Lets be honest here.  Vegas has us as being one of the worst teams in the league right now.  We have so many holes to fill its mind bogging.  Lets say cam plays, wills us to 8 wins (and come on thats being generous) then what?  You sign him?  So you are basically rolling him out knowing what the outcome is already and hence you lose a year by having to start over with a new qb.

Which leads to another thought about cam staying.  What if we draft one?  Is cam going to play knowing this is his absolute last year with the team?  I doubt it.  Why would he?

I think its like you said, Cams people find it more advantageous for a fresh start with a new team.  Question is where?

And all of that what I just posted is basically factoring in that Cam gets healthy which obviously is a huge question mark as we sit here in early march.

I have nothing against him, but like I have said numerous times about this, the timing on just about every factor involved is off.  The surgery, the shoulder, the contract, etc.  Everything is just lining up for him to get dealt.  Chicago would be fools to not offer a 3rd for him.

You do not base re signing Cam on how many wins a team has. That makes no sense. How he does individually so cosseting circumstances, what the new coaching staff thinks they can get out of him from working a year with him and his health should decide that AND his value.

Cam isn’t the best QB in the NFL and unless he balls out this year he isn’t going to demand this crazy 40 or even 35 million a year like the diehard Cam fans claim.

If Cam doesn’t want to play on one year then let him go. The Panthers paying him before he’s played a full season is more stupid than Cam willing to play for one year. At least Cam can cash out betting on himself. And if Cam wants to stay here he can do exactly that. This isn’t a hard concept.

I do not see how you get a third rounder for a broken QB. No one is going to give a 3rd and unless we’re targeting a new QB in the draft, it’s not going to happen.

While I don't think Cam will be wanting 40 million, we do need to face reality here.

Jacoby Brissett and Kirk Cousins are pulling in 28 million a year, and I'm pretty sure that a healthy Cam is a *much* better QB than either of those guys.

To me people keep asking the wrong questions around Cam.

The biggest question is what do you do if Cam comes back and is great but the team still sucks. If that’s the case it could be interesting because he’ll be a free agent. No QB plays under the tag and if the team sucks and we’re truly rebuilding why would either party want to continue together?

What you might see is Cam use the panthers to rebuild his value around the league and go cash out with a team that’s a QB away.

There’s been no indication whatsoever Cam has ever had any problem with playing the last year on his deal, so any rhetoric that starts with that line of thinking is off course to begin with.  To me, the only unclear situation that could arise is if the team is terrible this year and Cam doesn’t look good, the debate will be whether Cam wasn’t good because the team wasn’t good or if he simply has lost It. If Cam is bad on a decent team, he’s gone. If Cam is bad on a good team, he’s gone. If Cam is good on a bad team, he gets a new deal. If Cam is good on a good team, he gets a new deal.

Free agency is a long long way off for Cam, Tepper can tag on him 3 straight years if he chooses to.

Cam has unequivocally said Charlotte is where he wants to be.

I believe it will get worked out and Cam plays another 5-6 years for the Panthers.

Let's say we draft well. Stop laughing, there's a new sheriff in town. Grab a couple FAs. Then Cam comes back and gets that team to say 8-8. All of a sudden our REBUILD is half way done already.

All that truly needs to happen is to draft well the next two years. Add in a few FAs, and this team can be competitive. Easy peasy.

If that is the way the Powers That Be wish to go, it doesn't seem like that big of a pipe dreams to me. Besides, who wants to go through a tear it down, to build it back up Rebuild anyway?

    • Soooo many bad turnovers again. Luckily Martin played well.
    • Yes. Cade 100% tripped and pitched it to Mafah.  That’s not in dispute.  We agree on that.  Mafah got the ball, fell to the ground and then attempted to complete the rest of the play….which was the lateral to the WR on the end around.  You are calling the lateral from Mafah to the end around WR the ball popping up.   It was whistled dead.   Then they ran another play.  the review then awarded the ball to SC after we ran another play for what happened after a play was whistled dead.   How does that part work lol?  How do you recover a ball if a play was whistled dead for a downed player prior to a recovery?  I think the refs screwed Clemson twice.   That’s not why they lost.  Please don’t think that is my argument.   They lost because Cade chocked and panicked at the end.  They lost because Sellers should have been put on the ground for a loss countless times and they didn’t.  They lost because our over loyal Dabo wouldn’t bench his favorite hurt RB.    Clemson lost for lots of reasons. SC deserved to win.  Those calls were bad though IMO.  They exist in every game.
    • I can’t recall an NBA team with this many injuries.  It’s getting absurd at this point
