Expect More Moves Like These

Untouchable

Russell Okung and Chris Smith are exactly the types of transactions to expect this off-season.  The team is likely on a mission to clear up cap space going forward but they also are probably looking to stack up on draft capital through comp picks that need to be protected as well.

Some will be brought back, but Addison, Boston, Bradberry, Butler, Cockrell, Elliott, Irvin, McCoy, Van Roten, Poe and Wright all have potential to fetch something in return in 2021.  Bet that most of the off-season's transactions this season are going to be either trades or players who were released.  After the trade, LT comes off as a position of need, but the team still needs to address/upgrade a lot of position including, but not limited to, LG, RG, WR, TE, DTx3, DE, LB, CBx2, Sx2.

For example, players like Prince Amukamara, Xavier Rhodes (projected cut), Brandon Carr (trade) to replace a departing James Bradberry would be in line with this thinking.

I mean... A rebuild isn't always just stockpiling draft picks and starting with a completely young team. It involves trades to get veteran players at key positions. This isn't anything new but this whole board has the impression we were going to pretty much draft a whole new team.

That's what I had been trying to explain to some folks. If you sign a free agent tackle like Jason Peters or Big V, it goes against your comp pick formula. Trade for a guy like Okung, it doesn't hurt your comp pick formula.

It's the same as signing Okung to a 1 year $13M contract, except you protect your comp picks.

I feel like we are going the same route as the Dolphins of last year. Maybe not to that extreme but we will look to hold on to as much cash as possible. Many reasons to, new CBA equating to more to spend for the cap most likely, new stadium and trying to build the team in the exact image that Rhule wants. Too many times as fans that has seen some degree of success since drafting Cam expect this transition to be a walk in the park. I feel the opposite, this will be difficult time and separate the fair weather fan from the die hard.

I do agree that trades can be good and that I definitely want to keep the comp picks. We honestly could get quite a few good ones. Bradberry should get a 3rd. Boston, Butler, Addison, McCoy and even Irvin could be in that 4-5th range each, maybe 6th. Guys like Van Roten and Hogan are more likely 7th rounders, maybe 6th for Van Roten if he gets a starting salary. Poe and Wright are mysteries because I read that declining option FAs no longer count as of 2019 but it’s not a published rule. Either way, I’d honestly expect a 3rd, 4th, 2-3 5ths and a 6th or 7th. 6 comp picks wouldn’t surprise me and that’s a decent amount of ammo to move around. Maybe Cam for a 2021 2nd is an option if we can’t get a 2020 pick. That would load us up, especially if we have a top 3 pick like I’m expecting.

Dolphins are loaded with picks. 3 firsts and 2 seconds this year and 2 firsts and 2 seconds next year and all 4 of their picks are top 5 or maybe top 10 next year. If they draft well, that’s some serious potential, maybe 9 of their 22 starters.

I'm just saying Hurney, for all the criticism, has managed to build two Superb Owl teams (that second one Gettleman was GM, but the team was built and picked by Hurney). The guy can rebuild a team from just rubble and rags like no one else.

Each of those teams managed a three-year run of contention/relevance.. so that's not bad. Endurance hasn't been their strong suits, though. Perhaps with new coaching we can build something durable.

Our owner is worth 12 billion, we don't need to save cash like the dolphins.

Yeah, when you have a coach that isnt willing to change or evolve with the league. You are gonna shorten your window based off that.

Hurney didn't build the second SB team, Gettleman did. Hurney had drafted key players by building crap teams and having high picks. Gettleman actually built the team in 2015 still working through the cap mess that Hurney had left. I'm no Gettleman fan, but he filled in the team around those key players with virtually nothing to work with in free agency.

Hurney doesn't play the long game. He goes for big hits in the draft and more often than not whiffs. 70 homers looks great on a stat sheet as long as no one sees the 300 strike outs right beside it. His record shows he's not good at building a whole team.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
