Trading for Okung wasn’t as bad of a decision As many people think.

A 31 year old LT making 16 million in the final year of his contract is nothing to be excited about. When delving deeper into the reasons why it was done you will see that it makes sense from a development perspective. The money Okung is making may seem as a “sunk cost” but he is eligible for a savings of 13 million if cut June 1st. This is a way of alleviating the equivalent of what Turner would’ve cost over 2 years and only losing 3 million if cut. If in turn they decide to keep him he will help ease Greg Little into the LT role, instead of forcing him into it. He looked good prior to his concussion but wasn’t the same afterwards. Instead of rushing him back they have a proven NFL starting LT that will be working with his former O Line coach, who in turn helped the Chargers be one of the more prolific running team the last few years. Okung s contract is only an obligation for one more year and I see it as a positive for not reaching for a LT prospect too early. No need to give up on Greg Little yet like many Huddlers have been calling for. We need to shore up the D with a good mix of young and older and get Cam another weapon whether it be a #1 WR another TE or a bruising RB to take the load off of CMac. For long time fans this will be one of the most intriguing times in Panthers history. This is the first time in almost 30 years we have almost no clue what direction the organization is taking and I for am excited to see how this goes!

Also, before June we should have a good idea of what we have in Okung as to long term usage or if he can even take the field.

If he can't play and is pretty much done, he can be cut at only a $3 million hit to our cap. We can move forward with Daley or Little or a draft pick.

If he can play, but the long term isn't there because of lingering injuries and age, then we have a good teaching LT for an almost reasonable $16 million (compare to Turner's basically $13 mill cap hit) and we're okay. We can also develop Daley and Little over this time.

Let's say best case scenario is that Okung looks good through OTAs and into the season. If there appears to be good tread left on his tires, the whole contract can be renegotiated and we can use leftover cap space to bonus him this season and get him on the cheap for say two more seasons ahead.

Overall, this scenario offers a couple of good wins and at worst a minimal downer. Hurney may well have done a really good trade here -- not quite a Greg Olsen for a 4th rounder trade, but still solid work.

Ummm have you watched Okung??? He sucks buddy

Pretty sure Oher didn’t play well in Baltimore, came to Carolina and did pretty decent, so just because someone struggles in one place doesn’t mean they’re done.

Little can't defend against speed rushers.  TB, Atlanta, and NO all put speed rushers on his side and they killed him last year.  He gives up and he did this in college too once a speed rusher got by him.  He is better at backing up as a pass blocker why guard would be better for him.  The only problem he can't pull cause he doesn't have the quickness.  No we need a better version of a LT since we haven't have one since Gross wore the uniform.

I think the plan is to move Daley--to LG, and Little to RG---not sure how either will fit, however.   Speculation, of course, but it makes sense.  Little is bad about bending at the waist--and that exposes your cranium to defenders.  I am guessing that he will not do that inside---maybe this is out of necessity more than we realize---it will be interesting to see if that happens.

Perhaps that 'capologist' the Panthers hired away from the Steelers is already hard at work and this was one of his suggested moves. I'm going to wait and see how the draft and training camp go before I get too worked up about it.

There was a tweet from yesterday somewhere that said Turner also wanted a new deal.

Either way we were facing the reality of parting with Trai sadly.

No it's a  1 year contract vs a 2year contract.   It is more about the contract length then the players...

I wasn't referencing the contracts.  BUT If you're containing it within this season, we're accepting both a larger contract and 9 mil in dead cap.  We're taking that so we don't have to deal with Turner next year.  There was more value to be had here.  We're effectively losing spending money to get rid of a guy and only receiving a 1-year stop gap in return.  It's not bad looking at the future but just hard to swallow.  I'd much prefer to be financially nimble in 2020 even if we're just in tear down.
