The dead cap is not really Hurney contracts -- do some research: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/cap/

  • Luke Kuechly - 11M - Retired
  • Matt Kalil - 9.8M - Dave Gettleman contract
  • Greg Olsen - 3.7M - (But saved about 8M)

The rest of the guys on the list are basically inconsequential, we had 4 players as of this AM making more than 10M - Cam, KK, Trai, and Poe's option is reported to be declined. That will leave us with 3 players with salaries over 10M in 2021; pending what we do in FA, which I expect to be modest.

In raw numbers cutting or trading KK, or Trai would be roughly a savings of 3M each, after subtracting salary vs savings, if you are Cam you should want to be here for the next window, he's 30 and we seem to have a staff in place looking to play modern football. This would be an ideal location not to mention.

If the cap is managed well over the next two seasons, and the drafts / FA's pan out, we should be much better off.

So is he good or not good at negotiating contracts ?

This is far from the straw that would break the camel's back (if the dead cap weren't so bad I'd endorse it), but if it's fire-sale mode all offseason with every good player, I'm taking a year off and not buying/watching/following/investing in an 0-16 team. It's simply not worth my time, but I don't think everyone necessarily needs that approach.

If they get rid of Cam and CMC, the stadium on gameday of Week 1 at home will be as full as it is right now.

When you look at the guys he's brought in since returning what contract has he extended that is currently hurting the cap?

When you look at the guys brought in since returning . How many of those guys are helping us win games ?

I stand corrected, the timing of Gettleman's exit and Hurney coming in over-lapped that off-season.

So a 4 year deal @ 20.5M guaranteed...you call that a bad contract for what was a All Pro / Pro Bowl caliber RG?

Not to mention the out and 6M in savings in the final year...

So if a player don’t live up to his contract doesn’t that make it a bad contract ?

How many stayed healthy...?

Bashaud Breeland - Failed physical

Ross Cockrell - Broken ankle (then played well this past season)

Dontari Poe - Was signed at market value arguable a bit less, and was avg

Bruce Irvin - Just had 8.5 sacks

Gerald McCoy - Just had 5 sacks

Jarius Wright - With Cam was a legit slot threat

-------------------------------------

Most of the issues in 2019 came down to injuries, most notably not having an NFL caliber QB, but I don't look at any of those moves and say that was a bad contract. No free agent, or extension he's done since returning has hampered the salary cap.

It's the coaching staff's job to maximize the roster, see 8-8 in PIT with all the injuries they faced this year, Rivera was a great leader, but a mediocre coach carried by all world talent at QB, and LB.

I like Rivera, but we all saw him get out coached several times over the years as well as questionable roster / play time decisions. (Vets over talented young guys)

Must be nice if that’s all he had to do .

Considering 20M guaranteed, I'd say he met that, again the GM don't coach, or play. You can't sit here and say that deal when signed was a bad deal, Trai was a young All-Pro caliber RG.

Rivera was average at best and I’m glad we finally let him go . But I’ll say this . Rivera is better at his job than Hurney is at his but one of those two guys are still here making big decisions . I pray he can turn it around but i doubt it . I hope Rhule is making the big decisions for us . Esp in the draft
