Rodrigue: Panthers not likely to pick up Dontari Poe option

NAS

It's not his play that's at issue here.  Someone said above, prior to getting hurt, he wasn't bad for us last year.

Unfortunately, he never played up to his salary.  If you have him on half of what we're paying him, no one complains a bit.

Yeah he was definitely a solid 3-4 guy, but too little too late. We need to pay other guys that money.

In the end will it matter if we replace him with another FA dud this year? Out with the old and in with the new I guess. We would have been better off signing a true NT but that requires having a brain. Add Paridis and start purging the older bad contracts. KK next year.

The Panthers aren’t expected to pick up DT Dontari Poe‘s option.

Poe is owed $9.8 million coming off an injury-shortened 2019. He graded as one of PFF's top defensive tackles before going down in Week 12. The Panthers are moving on but there should be a market for Poe, who doesn't turn 30 until August. Poe missed just two games prior to last season.

He wasn’t solid. Go look at the game logs. Our run D cost us the game against the Rams. We just played some run impaired teams early. All of our DL had nice sack totals. None of them played well against the run. Poe in no way was very solid. He was right there when we got slaughtered by SF. He recorded 0 stats when Aaron Jones walked all over us.

Short this year. We would have to pay Short $14M in salary this year to keep him. The $17M dead cap is the dead cap whether we release him this year when we know we aren’t winning anything and next year. That dead cap does not go down in any way if we keep him. Cut him and our salary cap hit is $17M in 2020. Keep him this year and our salary cap hit is $20M in 2020 and $11M in 2021. Seems obvious which is better. People freak out about “dead cap” and don’t get the numbers.

Why would we pay $14M for a DT who has clearly lost what he had in 2015-2017 and a DT coming off season ending injury when he’s 31?

I still think we should keep Short and let him play out the contract.  We need to draft another DT in 1st or 2nd round who is going to help stop the run.

I'm with you on Short but I see Marty protecting his butt after making that bad extension. Keep him and cut him next offseason was what I expected not wanted. He is actually set to make $20+ the next two years which is not close to being worth it.

You guys are nuts. I couldn't count the number of times a guard and/or the center flew by him to pick up Luke. Poe never demanded a double team which is what you need in a standard 3/4. He was serviceable, but far far from starter quality. KK is the only player that could demand a double team. Check out those numbers again, where did we finish in run defense? 29th, that's where, averaging giving up 143.5 Yards per game. He wasn't solid, I think Love should have been above him on the depth chart. PFF must be blind.

It’s a waste. We could find someone to do almost as good a job for way less than $28.5M in salary to play out the last two years of his contract. He’s already stolen $30M for the past two years and you want to let him take more money? Did you hate Matt Kalil’s contract? You’re suggesting paying an old, clearly not as good as he was, injured Short $3M more than we paid Kalil in total for the next two years. If we do, then we deserve the shitty rebuild we’ll get.

    • I like that a lot; Ware from Troy and also Khalil Mack who played at University of Buffalo
    • I remember the Huddle consensus over the course of last season and the previous one. Lots of Bryce is a bust, we should've drafted a 4th slot WR, should've kept Wilks, should've kept an armless Cam, etc etc. So... yea... already thought about that. I wouldn't trust the Huddle to detail my car, let alone run a multi-billion dollar professional sports team. 😛
    • bold prediction, I think Mike Green will be the best pass rusher in this class, and thats even with abdul carter.  He reminds me of demarcus ware, not just in size and prowess, but even coming from a Sunbelt school (Ware from Troy, Green from Marshall).  I think he is passionate about the sport where I think Carter as the physical freak might not have the heart.  Thats the guy Im sold on and am gonna hammer the table for, I know he's not projected 8, but he is projected like 12-13, so if a slide back can happen and we still get the guy I want, I'm 100% on board. All that said, it takes 2 to tango, I think the Cowboys are the tango-er.  IMO theres a VERY good shot that Jeanty is available at 8.  Why does that matter?  Not only do the cowboys NEED a runningback (dak sucks without a run game), but MORE importantly, gee where did Jeanty play in high school.....Frisco TX, literally Dallas Metro.  Soo, RB is a position of need and the best RB and most blue chip draft selection that  could improve the offense immensly played IN dallas metro AND will be in range for them to move up and pick?  Do ya think Jerry Jones is gonna just say no to the Jersey Sales?  Jerry might have sexually assaulted a woman and attempted to prevent black people from going to school, but he's no idiot (he is).  IMO, we get a good enough package, prlly their first and third,  maybe a conditional later and we move to 12.  We get Green, they get Jeanty, everbuddy happy.
