No he wasn't one of the best pass blocking LT's in college.

Overview

Little possesses the important combination of size, length and quickness as a prototypical left tackle prospect. While he wasn't asked to do it much in 2018, he has the athletic ability to handle zone-blocking duties, which could suit his skill-set more than a physical rush attack. Little is a natural bender with good feet and pepper in his punch as blind-side protector, but his average anchor and inconsistent body control create some concern. He will be an early starter at left tackle, but needs to improve his strength and eliminate his tendency to lean in order to reach the potential his physical and athletic traits offer.

STRENGTHS

—Football bloodlines with a body that can still add bulk and strength.

—Three-year starter against the toughest competition in the country. Willing and able to take on the best edge-rusher.

—Agile feet to slide with and mirror quick edge-rushers and shows the ability to truly cut off the edge.

—Hands are always ready and waiting to strike and counter hand-fighting.

—Excellent arm length (35¼") with massive hands (10¼").

WEAKNESSES

—Anchor needs improving. More functional strength in his lower half will go a long way.

—Too often is a finesse blocker when he could easily overpower opponents.

—Gets beat too often by reaching for rushers rather than sitting back and waiting for them.

Effort may be his biggest red flag. Little tends to take plays off when he is either tired or when he knows the play won’t go his way. General managers and scouts will make a note of this. Defenses will also pick up on this in film and use it against him. This has to be fixed if Little wants to develop into a high-caliber NFL player.

In the clip, Little does not move his feet and chicken wing blocks him with his right arm. A chicken wing block is when you keep your arm in while blocking like you are doing the chicken dance. He doesn’t initiate contact nor reach out and maintain contact.

The last give clips and shows that he is not the great pass block Marty tried to sell us on.

He was constantly rated in the top  5.  You are right though, it’s based mostly on potential.

Seems he has all the physical tools to be a great NFL LT. Maybe Rhule can help him achieve his potential.

Jonah Williams must be trash cause he didn't play at all his rookie season.. lol

Leki Fotu has shown up on a lot of Panthers mock drafts considering how little known he is by the typical fan. Even I have put him in one of my Panthers mock drafts. I like that he's huge but also strangely lean, so he'll have good stamina for his size.

Maybe Rhule can but it is hard to develop the want to do something when you never had to do it.  We will see.  I hope he does stay and becomes a good NFL lineman but he will never be elite.

Pick 7: Derrick Brown, DT.

UPDATE: Jeff Okudah, CB > Derrick Brown, DT > Isaiah Simmons, LB. At least one should be available when the Panthers pick. Can't go wrong with any of these guys.

Pick 38: Denzel Mims, WR.

UPDATE: Kyle Dugger, SS. After signing Robby Anderson I do not see the need to select a WR high in the draft. A secondary of Okudah, Jackson, Boston, and Dugger will be great moving forward. Looking at the NFCS, I think it is time to finally invest into the secondary.

Pick 69: Malik Harrison, LB

UPDATE: No Change. With the move back to a 4-3 defense I like this selection even more. A linebacker core of Whitehead - Thompson - Harrison no longer looks like a weakness on the defense.

Pick 113: Cesar Ruiz, C/LG

UPDATE: Leki Fotu, NT. I know he is no Star Lotulelei, but maybe having a true space eating nose tackle next to Kawann Short will allow him to actually earn some of his paycheck. Slowly the defense has gone from vomit inducing to looking like there is some potential.

I originally did not make selections past this point. Here is my continuation after doing some more research on potential prospects.

Pick 148: Damien Lewis, G. Very similar to Trai Turner also coming out of LSU. Should compete for the RG position.

Pick 152: Amik Robertson, SLCB. 5'8 scrappy, small school (LA Tech) corner with all the tools to be a successful NFL slot corner. Could develop very similarly to Captain Munnerlyn.

Pick 184: Jonathan Garvin, DE. This guy could really benefit from playing and developing under a coach like Matt Rhule.

Pick 221: Rodrigo Blankenship, K. Why the hell not. This team needs an open kicker competition.

I really think with this draft and maybe a few additions with post draft cuts in FA, this defense may surprise some people. If the Panthers are actually going to try and compete this season, a defensive heavy draft like this one is very much needed.

Good stuff, three small gripes

1. leki fotu is not a space eater, hes a penetrating nose tackle according to scouting reports and believe it or not often struggles against the run despite his size. Hes also not flexible enough to be a 3t. Still good depth player.

2. If we get damien lewis at 148 that would be an absolute steal doubtful hea there that late.

3. Harrison is more a mlb on early downs kinda guy. If we move shaq back to the outside it could work. Id leave shaq in the middle and go after troy dye.

He played LOLB at Ohio State and is still being projected as an ILB in a 3-4 or strong side backer in a 4-3. He is explosive and has a nose for the football.

I would love for Patrick Queen to fall. He is being compared to Thomas Davis. I would take him in the second over Dugger but I don’t think he makes it out of the first round.

Not sure they are correct but sounds like a two down guy according to the two scouts.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
