Eazy-E's mock draft | Update 4/4

Recommended Posts

Pick 7: Derrick Brown, DT.

UPDATE: Jeff Okudah, CB > Derrick Brown, DT > Isaiah Simmons, LB. At least one should be available when the Panthers pick. Can't go wrong with any of these guys.

Pick 38: Denzel Mims, WR.

UPDATE: Kyle Dugger, SS. After signing Robby Anderson I do not see the need to select a WR high in the draft. A secondary of Okudah, Jackson, Boston, and Dugger will be great moving forward. Looking at the NFCS, I think it is time to finally invest into the secondary.

Pick 69: Malik Harrison, LB

UPDATE: No Change. With the move back to a 4-3 defense I like this selection even more. A linebacker core of Whitehead - Thompson - Harrison no longer looks like a weakness on the defense.

Pick 113: Cesar Ruiz, C/LG

UPDATE: Leki Fotu, NT. I know he is no Star Lotulelei, but maybe having a true space eating nose tackle next to Kawann Short will allow him to actually earn some of his paycheck. Slowly the defense has gone from vomit inducing to looking like there is some potential.

I originally did not make selections past this point. Here is my continuation after doing some more research on potential prospects.

Pick 148: Damien Lewis, G. Very similar to Trai Turner also coming out of LSU. Should compete for the RG position.

Pick 152: Amik Robertson, SLCB. 5'8 scrappy, small school (LA Tech) corner with all the tools to be a successful NFL slot corner. Could develop very similarly to Captain Munnerlyn.

Pick 184: Jonathan Garvin, DE. This guy could really benefit from playing and developing under a coach like Matt Rhule.

Pick 221: Rodrigo Blankenship, K. Why the hell not. This team needs an open kicker competition.

I really think with this draft and maybe a few additions with post draft cuts in FA, this defense may surprise some people. If the Panthers are actually going to try and compete this season, a defensive heavy draft like this one is very much needed.

With the depth in this WR class, I really hope we don't move up to address that position.

I definitely agree that if we choose to go WR relatively early that Mims would be a strong candidate given his size and the Rhule connection. We sure have some wild swings with our WR corps. From all big and slow to all small and quick. We could certainly use some size right now.

I just have a feeling Rhule will be wanting to move up if it means getting one of his guys.

Would absolutely LOVE Mims here, but I don't think we get him without moving up. Due to the depth of WR in this draft, I don't want to give up any assets to move up for one because there will certainly be a first-round talent in any other year WR sitting there at 39. I also wouldn't mind a B2B in rounds 3 and 4 of Claypool-Moss.

I think Brown at 7 and one of the corners like Diggs or Terrell at 39 to help seal those two gaping holes and then come back with WR/TE after that.

This is a nice one and it could very well fall like this. I think Simmons or Wirfs will be Gettleman pick which should allow Brown to fall to 7. I think he would be such a strong building block.

Love Mims. Not much more needs to be said.

And Malik is a very solid linebacker. Was a leader on that Ohio State defense and is really quick and wicked smaaht.

I'd rather get one of the top 3 OTs than D.Brown DT , but it's admittedly a solid draft.

I just feel like we're a really good LT away from having a good oline, whereas one dude isn't going to change our dline that much imo

I agree LT is a bigger need that DT but Brown could be one of those guys that is a cornerstone of our DL for a decade.

I generally disagree on the good LT away. I still think we need some help at OG and we really, really, REALLY need to shore up the depth on that unit. It's appalling.

No brainer. DT is currently the weakest position on the team imo.

Pick 38: Denzel Mims, WR.

Ran a sub 4.4 40 at 6ft 3 and had an insane 3 cone drill. Add the Matt Rhule connection and I think it is a real possibility the Panthers move up to make sure they get him. Moore, Samuel, and Mims would solidify the WR group for the foreseeable future.

Pick 69: Malik Harrison, LB

Athletic LB who would pair very well with Shaq. Would fit right into Shaq's old OLB spot in a 4-3 or the second MLB in a 3-4.

Pick 113: Cesar Ruiz, C/LG

Here is a guy I would move back into the 3rd round to grab if he is still available. Would play LG as a rookie and transition to C next year when Matt Paradis is hopefully gone.

I believe Greg Little and Denis Daley will get a chance to lock down the LT position which is why offensive line was not take early. Secondary will be addressed in free agency along with filling the rest of the defensive line. I do not know the later round prospects well enough to finish the draft. Would probably look to grab a developmental TE and lineman along with a slot corner.

Let me know what you think.

Do you think Fotu drops that far ?

I’ve seen mocks with him in the 5th so I have no idea what to expect. He’s nothing more than a space eating nose tackle so personally I wouldn’t go any higher than a 4th for a player like him. The value just isn’t there.

If he was a more dominant/complete DT like Star was he would be pushing into the first round like Dexter Lawrence last year.

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
