There's someone who REALLY smells like the pick to me...

If you are a South Carolina fan don't start. I'm not on here begging for the Panthers to draft Isiah Simmons... DTs are not top 10 grade players, sorry, but it's the truth. It'd be a stupid pick when the best MLB in history is retiring. There are always solid DTs in free agency, they are not worth using a pick that should always be a pro bowler. If Isiah Simmons is there, I honestly think he is the pick there just based off the fact we need a LB BAD. Short is still there at DT...

As a Univ. of Colorado alum, have absolutely no skin in this game.  The South Carolina-Clemson thing has nothing to do with any of this.  The fact that it keeps getting brought up now thrice means people are getting offended by the preference over the Clemson kid.

Would not complain at all with Simmons but there's a mixed history with these position-less linebackers Barr, Mingo, Ogletree, Rolando.  Interior D is arguably the most important part of the modern NFL defense.  The Chiefs, 49ers, Bills, etc. all built theirs with high upside picks to success.  Collapse the pocket quickly over singular edge rushers; that's what rattles the mobile QBs.

I've leaned hard in the DL direction for a while now, and I have to say that Kinlaw is my guy if we go there.

The only other option, at this point IMHO, is one of the top OTs and you have to put in a poo ton of work on him to make sure he's your guy. Otherwise, it is FA for OL.

I absolutely agree. If a DT has to be the pick, I honestly feel that we could trade down and get a 2nd or potentially another 1st if we go low enough and get a talent at least close to as good as Kinlaw. That's just not a position I feel ever needs to be taken in the 1st round, people take RBs here and there, but it doesn't always work out. Elliot and CMC are really the only 2 that REALLY hit from the top 10, Gurley is slowing down. We obviously have a lot of holes, if we want to fill DT, let's wait for Tua or Herbert to fall for us and get a team in the mid teens or late 20s to give us 2 1sts and a 2nd for that pick. People overpay for QBs all the time, I just don't see DT as a position you give up a pick that a trade down to the mid 20s would likely net you a 2021 1st rounder. Hell the Saints did it for like pick 14 and lost their pick for 2 years.to draft a development player. It's not a hit at the player, but if we're not taking a big skill position, trade down.

*Added a disclaimer because some seem to want to make this about location and college.  No one cares about your rivalry!

I don't care about the rivalry either. It's stupid to draft DTs in the 1st round and every SC fan who likes the Panthers begs for us to draft their best player 1st round every year. The year Hayden Hurst was drafted, people begged for us to ignore WR and go TE (Don't forget, Olsen played all of 2017 before this pick). I apologize if you had other reasons.

I do go to Clemson, but I could give two craps about SC. We beat them 6 times in a row and they have no end in sight to beating us, it's not even a rivalry anymore. My point is I don't go beg for Clemson draft picks every time.

I apologize.

I apologize.

Because a HOF LB and another LB we signed to a top 5 contract were plenty to send us spiraling to a awful run defense because of injuries and lack of ability of out DTs to keep OL off them.

He is a little different than Brown but it is a flavor call.  Kinlaw has amazing traits and moves a little better than Brown.  Brown is just silly strong and bullies OL.  Both are really good.  Love how Kinlaw played his best games against elite comp.

I'd say Kinlaw can / will move up and down the DL.

Brown is a true NT, he's gonna be in the middle, I think at the next level that versatility could be valued more potentially. A lot boils down to if Poe is retained IMO.

If we lose Poe that is a gaping hole up front, also will we make an offer to Butler....the ball will be moving on all of this before we know it.

Thanks for the transparency.  On the prospect/position side of things, I have to disagree on this DT notion.

  • Ed Oliver arguably put the Bills defense over the top this past year
  • Deforest Buckner and Arik Armstead (Multi-tech) as mentioned were monumental in making SF what they are
  • Leonard Williams is a stud
  • Umm...Aaron Donald at #13 seemed worth it and not stupid for the Rams! At all.
  • Suh, McCoy for their respective clubs back in 2010? Both were all-pros.
  • Daron Payne and Vita Vea are on the cusp of breakout years going into year 3s

Looking at the history of LBs in the first scares me.  Especially these multi talented chess piece types.  Now with the game evolving, maybe he's actually perfect for the moment and future, but I have more trepidation with him than with foundational lineman for fortify the trenches.

Two thoughtful breakdowns:

Defensive Tackle - Historic Draft Perspective

Linebacker (Non-Rush) - Historic Draft Perspective

If Brown and Okudah are gone, it def is coming down to Simmons or Kinlaw as our guy at 7. If it's Brown or Kinlaw, give me Brown all day.

The other option to consider is our early round 2 selection. If we go DT at 7, any chance we move back into the latter half of round 1 and grab someone like Murray or Queen? It cost the 'Skins a 2nd rounder in the following year (along with their current year 2nd rounder) last year to move up to #26 from the 2nd round.

Instant defensive improvement with a Brown/Murray first round.

The problem with FA OL is that they just aren't there. The ones that are any good who are there are old, and are going to cost a fortune.

Simmons+Blacklock/Madubuike or Brown+Murray/Queen/Malik would be legit.

1: Brown DT, 2: Murray LB, 3: Biadasz/Hennessy C (or one of the top mid round OTs)

...the remainder BPA with some weapons would be a pretty awesome haul IMO
