Rhule speaks at 2pm.

Speaking Tuesday, new Panthers coach Matt Rhule said he was "unbelievably excited" to work with Cam Newton.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported earlier Tuesday that the Panthers had decided to move forward with Newton as their starter, and Rhule's comments echoed that. "I really want him on the team," Rhule said, before adding the caveat, "when Cam’s healthy, he’s one of the best of the best." Rhule also added, "I don't really care if he’s full speed until September." Rhule did decline to name Newton his certain starter if healthy, but it had all the hallmarks of coachspeak. Newton is expected to ramp up football activities in March.

There's a lot of "I want", "I hope", "I'm planning", "I look forward to", "I can't say at this time", etc etc. Not a huge shock. Saying positive things but still leaving all his options open.

Declining to name him as a starter was a little clumsy, but you can understand it.

That's what I was saying. Everyone is happy and excited about what he said like it's a guarantee cam is back but he honestly didn't really say anything. He said he likes cam and wants him here.. That's it

I want cam back but I just think tepper doesn't want him here for whatever reason

It's one thing to say he wants him here. But he was specifically asked if cam would be the starter if healthy and didn't answer that question. That says a lot to me based on the current state of the quarterbacks on our roster

New coach jargon. It’s the old and tried “every guy has to compete, I don’t know these players and their tendencies”. Wouldn’t expect anything less from a new coach who has the advantage of all the question marks going into the draft. Like I said in a previous post, if teams want to think we’ll get Herbert or Tua and want to trade or reach for a QB in the 2nd let em, it’ll only work in our favor. No way any NFL coach believes Grier or Allen beats Cam for QB1
