Carolina sticking with Cam

WoahW

Recommended Posts

You know you can go 5 minutes without making the same damn post rehashed over and over right?

It isn't "Cam fans" keeping this convo going, it's those ready to finally push him out the door. Types like Mr. Scot thought the wait was finally over, now they can't get his name out of their mouth.

Drew Brees used to be a dual threat, he changed his game. Cam was 28 when he injured his shoulder cleaning up Kelvin Benjamins mess and has now been resting for almost 2yrs. The last coaching staff had Cam transitioning into a pocket passer, those hits and abuse came in the pocket not while Cam was running. Had Cam been allowed to run again(designed) he would have taken much less abuse because Cam has great field vision as a runner, he rarely takes hits running. The "threat" of Cam running or designed runs became less and less. I contest that he should have remained a dual threat QB. He got Shula'd.

The question is do you automatically discard a QB at RB age instead of QB age? Ridding yourself of a HOF caliber QB well before the twilight of his career so somebody else can win with him is not what stable franchises do. They desperately want to see what he has left which should be an almost full tank. Look at Miami, look at the Bucs. Instability, constantly losing. Is that what Panther fans want? Aside from the last year and a half Cam was never ever the reason this team lost games. It was the fact they didn't properly build around such a talent as him.

Brees has never been a dual threat QB

I think the variables that all FO should use to determine if they should move on from any player are:
1. Age
2. Previous performance
3. projected performance

4. Injury History
5. current health

6 Team fit

I think anyone would objectively say Cam has at least failed on at least 3 of those and you can arguably say 4 (Age, projected performance, injury history and current health)..... not good

By what measure is Cam a HoF caliber QB?

You use Miami and the Bucs as constant losers. How many consecutive seasons has Cam had?

He’s 30. I have no reason to believe he can’t produce at a high-level for five more years. Players get hurt, players recover. It happens.

I understand the reluctance. He’s been hurt. Just giving you my sense of how he will rebound. He’s doing it the right way now. The shoulder has had ample time. I wouldn’t say anything past five years. That’s my window.

You do know his shoulder is fugged up right?

That's possible. I don't really think it's likely though. Sticking him behind what we're likely to have for an offensive line doesn't really make me feel any better.

Truth be told, Thomas Davis is right. That might not be a great thing for us, but objectively it's true that he'd likely be better off elsewhere.

He imposes contact more than he “takes” it.

Do I think he can play until he’s 40? No. I think 35 is a reasonable assessment.

This is how we got here with his injuries, by the way:

Why does that have to do with him getting hit while he is running and the hits he has taken from crappy line play?  They all are rolled into one.

That’s fair. I’m not going to rip your opinion. It’s been the common narrative. I feel that Newton, with the weapons on offense, can put this team on a competitive track.

I’m probably just watching too much tape. Probably should just read more articles.

No if I was you I would come back in five years and see a whole different team. Also a team that hadn't even come close to playoffs because of the direction Tepper decided to go when he said the whole time after Rivera was fired that he wanted an experienced coach

I’m suggesting he has some years left in the tank. My window? Five years.

I know that seems optimistic. I also never said those five years would be played in Carolina.

Now, let me ask you a question: can we name a few examples of a team moving a franchise QB out at 31 y/o? Perhaps it’s happened. Or perhaps, you believe that his version of “31” is really like “39”.

And I understand that concern. But, at the same time, from the tape: Cam is not limited to being a running quarterback. It’s certainly a great dynamic to employ, but his contributions extend beyond that at this point. You’re talking about MVP caliber football before TJ speared his wing in 2018.

Jay Cutler was actually younger than that when the Broncos moved on from him, I think (I'd have to look it up).

Here's the truly operative question though: Is he still a franchise quarterback?

You're only moving on from a franchise quarterback if he can still play that role. Sad to say that's not guaranteed right now. In fact, there's plenty of reason to question it.

Bottom line for me: I can see us giving him a shot this year, but it's a huge risk for his future to play out of one year contract with no guarantees on a team that's rebuilding. If I were advising him, I'd absolutely be against it.

Barring an MVP type season though, it's pretty hard to imagine him still being a Panther after this season.

Yeah that sucks, but happy endings in the NFL are the exception, not the rule.

Well when cam himself says it................

Oh now what a player or coach says is 100% truth huh?

March will tell us what we need to know.

The usual suspects will put any little thing into the same tired sky is falling context because they want him gone. Rinse, repeat.

Anything short of an MVP type season and you think the Panthers would move on? Why?

Franchise quarterbacks go entire careers without having MVP type seasons.

Lmao Cam going to lie and say his shoulder is fugged up for the fun of it. Man there is a bunch of idiots on this forum. It has turned to complete trash in the last two years.
