Could all the trade Cam posturing be Tepper playing hard ball vs Newton contract?

i agree...but

IF we dont want him past next yr, need to get something for him now...otherwise we get nothing when he hits FA

so many qb's looking for homes this season.  its like nothing is falling in our favor.   if there weren't so many we would get better offers than what we'll see - if we're looking to trade him.   if we're looking for him to play out his contract and he plays really well we're in a bidding war and very well may end up with nothing, and in a position where drafting a top qb next year is out of reach with a mid first rounder.   hmmmm.  i feel like we should get what we can and take love if the other 3 are gone already, or i don't really know.  offer cam a 1 year extension? for what amount?  then trade him if he plays decent in what will be a better market, or resign him to a monster contract if he balls out with all the ramifications that could have given his style of play.   its a conundrum and i'm done with my own opinions and am very interested to see how it plays out.

Here's the thing though...

If you are absolutely certain you want to keep him, there's no way you let him play out the final year of his contract without an extension. If you do that and he plays well, he can get contract offers from anywhere and you either have to win a bidding war or use the franchise tag.

On the flipside, if you're Newton, playing out the last year of your deal without any guarantees puts all the risk on you.  If you get injured or play poorly, all your future earning potential goes out the window.

Like I said, I don't know what happens next, but I do know it's considered highly unlikely by pretty much all sources that the Panthers offer Newton any kind of extension prior to this season. If that doesn't happen, then all possibilities are open.

Most posters here over look this. If I am Cam, no way in the world am I playing this year in Carolina without a new contract. Especially if you consider the issues on the online and loss of talent on defense.
