Could all the trade Cam posturing be Tepper playing hard ball vs Newton contract?

4 Man Rush is a respectable outlet because they actually know what the hell they’re talking about. (Film analysis in particular)

That may be true, but this theory doesn't really make any sense. If I'm being brutally honest, it sounds like wishful thinking.

If a team were trying to drive down the cost of a potential extension, they wouldn't do it by hyping up the player. Talking a guy up is what you do when you're trying to get good trade value for him.

Whether or not Newton is ultimately staying or going, I don't know. But this particular theory just doesn't hold water for me.

I think that tweet was in the context of a number of different possibilities. I was actually part of that discussion on Twitter. I don’t think they’re banging the drum on that theory as much as has been made in this thread.

Hard to say. This particular tweet says he's convinced that Newton is here through "at least 2020". I can buy 2020. Beyond 2020 is a much harder sell.

There’s so many directions the team is going it’s hard to have a firm stance on the cam situation.

I‘d questioned the Shaq extension if the team is tanking, I question the comments from Rhule or tepper if the team is firm on moving in from cam, and the “significant haul” talk was just hot air. I question Cam’s comments on being certain he’ll be back.

i mean people can speculate all day about the moves that point towards a cam and panthers divorce, but not too many reports ect want to touch on why the comments from those directly involved point in the opposite direction.

doesn’t really increase his trade value, and either side catering to the fans is moot in the grand scheme of things

If you can see him here through 2020 then beyond shouldn't be that hard to envision. As someone who has had MVP caliber success all he needs to do is basically stay healthy in 2020. He could easily sign a 5 year deal after that and that lines up perfectly with what I think you can get out of Newton.

I could see him here in 2020 because he's under contract.

Beyond that, it's nowhere near that simple.

Nobody gives a sh-t if you're a former MVP. The only thing that matters is how good you are now, and even more importantly how good you're going to be in the upcoming years. Any GM who gives you a contract for how good you used to be is an idiot. Our current GM did that once under the old ownership. Seriously doubt the new owner would be so inclined.

For Newton to get a five year extension would require not just a healthy season but one hell of a season, performance wise. And that'd have to take place with a rebuilding roster around him. Could that happen? Sure, but how likely is it?

My stance isnt based on him being a former MVP but. I used that as a ceiling for measuring the type of ability he has. IF* he returns to full health and that is his ceiling, we know he can play the game is my point. If he plays at a level that's a notch or two below that is very reasonable and that would still make him a top 10 qb. At that point he has leverage, I dont see a team saying I dont want more of that at that point.

Even if he doesn't play out the full 5 years of the deal signing him to a 5 year deal after one productive healthy season seems to be a given when you adding the performance and status as the greatest player in franchise history.

Nobody knows what you will get out of Newton at this point which is the same case for any qb you would draft in the first round. So unless you want to further mortgage the future and give out picks to trade up, 2020 seems like the most sensible thing to do would be let him play out this year and see what he has in the tank, the rest is up to Newton.

Here's the thing though...

If you are absolutely certain you want to keep him, there's no way you let him play out the final year of his contract without an extension. If you do that and he plays well, he can get contract offers from anywhere and you either have to win a bidding war or use the franchise tag.

On the flipside, if you're Newton, playing out the last year of your deal without any guarantees puts all the risk on you.  If you get injured or play poorly, all your future earning potential goes out the window.

Like I said, I don't know what happens next, but I do know it's considered highly unlikely by pretty much all sources that the Panthers offer Newton any kind of extension prior to this season. If that doesn't happen, then all possibilities are open.

Yeah, the "playing hardball" thing just doesn't make sense when you dig into it.

Right now, the team holds his contract with a really reasonable price tag for this year. Cam may or may not be too injured to play successfully. Trading really hasn't started out in the league, even on an informal level. They haven't had the Combine yet, so if drafting a QB is even slightly on the radar, we haven't seen that final exam tape yet, yanno?

And in the end, Cam's contract will NOT be renegotiated before he hits at least OTAs, if not training camp, at the earliest. There's just nothing to give a new contract out to yet.
