Preferred Direction at QB?

What do you think is the right direction to take at QB?

  1. 1. Everyone seems sure about what they don't want to happen, so let's run a poll. What makes the most sense in rebuilding year 1?

    • Tua Tagovailoa
    • Justin Herbert
    • Cam Newton Returns!
    • No Cam, No Top QB, No FA, Allen-Grier 2020
    • 2nd-ish Round Special (Fromm/Eason/Hurts/Gordon)
    • FA Special (Bridgewater/Mariota/Keenum/Rivers)

Hurts looked terrible at the Senior Bowl, so I am definitely not wanting to see us take a flier on him unless it is 6th Round or lower. I am not against taking a 2nd round or later QB but I'd want it to be as a potential developmental guy(like Grier) who we can jettison with little to no impact if we whiff. I just don't want us to get into a scenario where we are planning on a later round QB being "the guy." That doesn't have a high probability of success historically. We just have so many obvious roster holes, I'd wouldn't prefer to spend a 2nd to 4th round pick this draft on a QB. I wouldn't HATE it, however.

Tua is a risk, flat out. He has a pretty high ceiling but I am not sure his body is suited for the NFL. That's something you have to factor in. Herbert is, IMO, clearly the best prospect of the bunch but you do wonder why he didn't light it up at Oregon more. I think a lot of the scouts expected him to sort of take that next step to being a dominant college QB and he just never did. That's a red flag, for sure.

I don't think you bring back Cam if you have zero intention of signing him long term. I think you bring back Cam if you aren't SURE if you want to sign him long term. Basically a one year "prove it" deal. Also, I think the "sign and trade" value and overall trade value of Cam may be limited overall just because of the recent injury history. One thing to consider is that our compensatory pick from Cam leaving after next season might actually be higher than what we could get in a trade. We won't know this information until actual trade offers are leaked or completed.

I also wouldn't really want to trade him for anything less than a 1st round pick(which is completely unrealistic, IMO). Getting another 2nd round pick would be great in theory but we have Marty Hurney drafting, so that pick doesn't really have a lot of value. That's one thing that we really need to be cognizant of, with Hurney doing the drafting, don't expect a lot out of those kind of picks. Expect a lot of gambling and fixating. I'd rather keep Cam than watch Hurney squander whatever resources we obtained in return.

Yeah I wouldn't touch Hurts or Eason.

I see Fromm going late first or early second and he could be interesting.  Gordon and Morgan will get some momentum.  I'm interested in Morgan but agree, overall unsure about taking a QB past the 2nd round.  I do expect the draft season to hit a point where some will mock Love to us at 7 so I advise we all brace for when that happens.

What your post reminds me is at the end of the day, this is still in large part in Hurney's hands which just pisses me off.  We need to get past this shmuck.  Value for Cam is meaningless given his track record.  On the plus side, maybe it could be a Kalil in Biadiasz or Hennessy.

What happens after that though?  1st healthy season in 4 years...you gonna make him a top 5 paid QB at 32/33?  Is that what Rhule wants?  Is it what Tepper believes is the best way to secure a Lombardi?

Yes, if he makes it through the season healthy and plays at a high level, I would re-sign him. I wouldn't have a problem making him a top 5-10 paid QB at 32. A lot of the current crop of 30+ elite/franchise QB's got large contracts after age 30. I don't know if that is what Rhule wants, I don't know if that is what Tepper wants. That's really an irrelevant factor in a discussion about our personal opinions on the matter. This whole thread is about OUR opinions. Whatever they do will have no bearing on what we think should happen. They aren't going to ask our input, that is for sure.

I would prefer to use this season to clean up the cap, move on from dead weight, get younger, and get deeper at D Line and O Line before overly concerning myself withe the QB position, all the while staying in the top 5 of next draft in the very likely case that we either can't sign Newton to an extension, or he cannot make it through the season.

None of that has to involve cutting/trading Cam. Any dead weight that is going to be removed is likely to be removed anyway. If we have no plans on using that $19.1 mil in cap space generated by moving on from Cam this year, then what is the real benefit of opening it up(I do realize that some of that can be rolled to next year)? And the top 5 2021 draft may happen with Cam or without. And it may not happen with him or without him. I don't like a "plan" that involves gambling on that possibility. We've only ever picked inside the top 5 three times in franchise history and one was an expansion year.

This team is god awful, having Cam at QB may win us an extra game or two, but this is a 12 or more loss team as we are sitting today.  Our roster was old, but talented...as soon as the old caught up to us it was over....now we are older, thinner, and have lost two of our very best players, and can hardly field a defense right now if we had to.

Make no mistake, this is one of the worst panthers rosters we have had in a LONG time.

The team may be awful, it's really hard to say because we haven't made any moves of real significance other than locking up Shaq. I don't think we have any real clue what the team plans on doing until the opening of free agency. Once you start seeing what the plans are, we can have some idea of what our roster will look like. I don't think we have anywhere near the worst roster in the NFL at the moment but it could end up that way for sure. Most likely due to attrition and having to replace so much at one time.

The more I read, the more I see the same questions and defenses emerging---I feel that we understand the dilemma facing the front office---

But the issue is probably not whether or not Cam is healthy and can prove it in 2020; it is whether they can get something for him vs. cutting him.

That is not disrespect huggers.  An architect doesn't start with the roof.

If #1 exits the franchise I am of the opinion we need to exhaust all options for this year. Kick the tires on trading up for the overall pick. I'm not sold on these pipe dream scenarios of everything falling into place for the perfect tank job.

If the noise around Burrow proves to be true, let's freaking do it.  This is far different from the NBA and if Newton is gone, we need to simply go after a QB.  I don't see why we can't aim high right now. All I ask is to not ship our 1st in 2021.

Also, looking ahead, all it takes is for a few random things to happen this coming year and Lawrence/Fields/Newman may not be so ideal in 2021.  This time last year, people were talking about Herbert/Tua/Love/Eason as some awesome draft class with Burrow not even in conversation.  Things can change very quickly.

I'm with you on being apprehensive over parting with the 2021 first rounder. Unfortunately I'm not sure there will be a scenario where that will be possible unless we throw in another player.  It all depends on how badly we want our guy.

Yes many things can change, but tanking is one of those things that sounds alright in theory until you see your team once again getting bent over and embarrassed by the entire division like we were last year. If the Bucs get a legit QB we could end up being swept by the South. It will be tough to stomach more of that but I guess it's inevitable.

I vote on giving Cam a chance to prove he can stay healthy and making this less of a rebuild..

But ppl need to get ready to hear alot about Jordan Love.. I got a guy feeling he is already on Marty mind and about to shoot up the boards during this process of draft season..

Yeah I had mentioned that somewhere.  As the draft season really kicks into gear, no doubt he'll be propped up all the way to #7 in mocks and such.  Just look at how the guys shot up boards last season.  Never know what happens!

I'd just go with Allen. I think he has the ability to pleasantly surprise, he is dirt cheap, and last year was pretty much his rookie year. People expected him to play like this 10 year vet last year. I think he may actually play pretty good if he has a full off season and training camp preparing as the starter. Allen does have good accuracy and Brady may be able to bring Allen to another level.

He is dirt cheap...and if he sucks...so what?
