Preferred Direction at QB?

davos

What do you think is the right direction to take at QB?

  1. 1. Everyone seems sure about what they don't want to happen, so let's run a poll. What makes the most sense in rebuilding year 1?

    • Tua Tagovailoa
    • Justin Herbert
    • Cam Newton Returns!
    • No Cam, No Top QB, No FA, Allen-Grier 2020
    • 2nd-ish Round Special (Fromm/Eason/Hurts/Gordon)
    • FA Special (Bridgewater/Mariota/Keenum/Rivers)

The poll?

The offseason.

I've said before the only scenario I think would be dimwitted is offering Newton an extension. As far as the other options, I honestly don't have a preference. Any one of them could be valid.

I did see one Twitter user who generally knows what she's talking about say there's a rumor that the Panthers like next year's quarterback draft class better than this year's. Don't know if that's true or not but that isn't the first time I've heard that suggested.

Pay attention to the Panther's interest in Herbert--especially if they get a high pick for Cam---

Do not rule out Detroit as a possible QB player.  Not sure if they would draft another Oregon QB so soon after Joey Harrington, but they might not worry about that.   Of course, they could need a  CB worse---but Stafford is an old 32, having played in Detroit for a decade.

Yeah, I think the poll is about everyone's preferences about the direction not a prediction of what will happen. Obviously none of us has a clue on that. The team probably doesn't have a clue yet. Which, I am starting to think that they just don't have a clue about much in general.

@LinvilleGorge I don't see you supporting your boy Herbert here. What gives?

I could be flat out wrong about Herbert. I just have to go off of what I've seen him do at Oregon in that offense. He very well could be capable of more. Interviews and white board work would go a long way in determining that.

But, based on what I've seen him do at Oregon, I wouldn't draft him any higher than the 3rd or 4th as a developmental prospect and I'd basically he picking him on physical talent alone.

They are financially committed to Stafford until 2022. I don't know that I would expect them to make a QB move. Stafford is a good QB and he's only 32. The back injury could be a concern but he was playing very, very well in 2019 prior to his injury. I am not sure you see them go QB unless they have some serious concerns with his health long term.

1. Tua won't be available unless we trade up, which is a bad move.

2. Herbert feels like a trap. He's the "next best guy," in this QB group, which over-inflates his actual value.

3. I'm cool with Cam Newton returning if we believe he's healthy and we invest in protecting him, or any QB we'll have in the backfield honestly. If you're going to get any value in return though you have to trade him.

4. I don't believe you can do nothing. Allen is a backup, and Grier was dreadful.

5. 2nd round QBs to develop are okay options, but you really have to sign someone in FA as a transitional guy if you're going this route.

6. If you go with a 2nd round QB Keenum and Rivers are good options on the table. I think Bridgewater is a guy you take if you want a QB now and don't like anyone in the draft. And Mariotta is a career backup at this point without a huge turn around.

Heard he can throw for 90 yards on his knees!

Keenum and Rivers are not likely to be cheap and I suspect Rivers will be looking for either a spot close to his new home(FL) or on a team that is capable of contending.

Cam or Tank seems to be the current trend. I am a little surprised by how many people seem to be embracing the tanking.

I don't think it's absolutely clear on who "wants to tank" and who just things we're going to be bad regardless.

I don't personally buy into tanking, but I do think we're going to be bad and we need to get value back where we can to jump start the rebuild. In my experience, if you're a team without much talent, injuries are generally going to do you in without having to sell the farm. You need foundation pieces to build around, and when you get them, you don't dump them chasing the next big thing, or worrying about winning too much.
