Preferred Direction at QB?

What do you think is the right direction to take at QB?

  1. 1. Everyone seems sure about what they don't want to happen, so let's run a poll. What makes the most sense in rebuilding year 1?

    • Tua Tagovailoa
    • Justin Herbert
    • Cam Newton Returns!
    • No Cam, No Top QB, No FA, Allen-Grier 2020
    • 2nd-ish Round Special (Fromm/Eason/Hurts/Gordon)
    • FA Special (Bridgewater/Mariota/Keenum/Rivers)

I’d prefer Cam, but it’s pretty obvious to me that’s not the way it’s going. If not Cam I’d rather try and draft a QB this year as I think tanking is a lot harder to do than people believe and it’ll cost more to move up for a guy next year.

Everyone seems quite opinionated about what they don't want.  Don't want certain trades, don't want said free agent, don't want Tua, don't want Herbert, etc.

Well what do we want? Poll time!

I want a decision made on Cam so we don't have to keep hearing these rumors. Make a decision before FA. Qb's are out there that could help this team. If we want a rebuild just do it and quit delaying the process.

Yeah I agree to an extent.  I'm not in love with Herbert but if he is there at 7, this board may turn into a mad house because I can really see that happening.  I'm forcing myself to warm up to Tua and Herbert.  Ideally, I want Derrick Brown but really don't know where we go at QB.  Want to get some peeps on the record haha.

I am curious to see the numbers on this poll.

I figured being a slow time before everything really unfolds this could tell a lot about what the majority here is thinking. (Edit: and some bark pretty loudly about what they think the right direction is at QB so wanna hear it from the more vocal huddlers)

I have a hunch Tepper is going after Tua but I’d rather let Grier get us a top 3 pick Next year.

I know we need line men but that’s a significant project. Getting a QB this year isn’t much different than getting one next year when it comes to our line play.

FYI: Scott Fowler and Alaina Getzenberg had a whole discussion on this:

Quote

Getzenberg: It seems unlikely to me that the Panthers’ starting quarterback Week 1 of 2020 will be the long-term starter. I think there’s a higher chance that the team goes with a stop-gap approach while they are rebuilding. They can’t afford to pay anyone too much next year, especially with a significant amount of dead cap, so free agent quarterbacks like Tom Brady and Philip Rivers seem out of the question.

I also think that because there are at least three teams ahead of them in the draft that need a quarterback, there likely won’t be one they like enough left to pick at seven.

Right now, I could see them bringing in a cheaper free agent quarterback that could potentially cost less than Newton, like Ryan Tannehill, possibly Teddy Bridgewater or Andy Dalton, if he becomes available. This QB would be a cheaper — or, in Bridgewater’s case, a more reliable option, health-wise — but would still bring a veteran presence into the quarterback room.

Fowler: Tannehill had a great year for Tennessee and Bridgewater would be exciting, but in my opinion the Panthers don’t gain too much and do spend too much money if they sign a stop-gap veteran of that caliber. If you’re going to do that, why not just keep Cam for another year and see how it goes? He’s still under contract for one more year at $21.1 million, after all.

And as enticing as someone like Rivers or Tannehill would be, this is still a Carolina team that isn’t going to be very good.

To me it makes more sense to use the No. 7 draft pick to pick a new quarterback. And, if needed, use that pick and some other assets — this year’s second-round pick, any player not named Christian McCaffrey, or both — and move up a spot or two to ensure you can get Oregon’s rocket-armed Justin Herbert (I’d also be happy with LSU’s Joe Burrow or Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, of course, but the price for either will likely be too steep).

What should the Panthers do at quarterback
