CMC Trade Talk (Might as well get it out there)

Problem is, one of his biggest selling points is his 2.8M base salary for this year. Take that away, and next year it goes up 10M with the tag. Not near as valuable, and almost any team is hesitant to sign any RB long term. Much less give up draft capital to do it.

And if he stays, is every carry or reception one you would much rather have in 4-5 years. It’s a crappy situation for RBs, and Johnson and Gurley put GMs back on their heels. CMC is as good as it gets. But if the team wants maximum value, they have to make a decision now.

I think we ultimately end up signing him to a $14-16 mil/year average deal that has a reasonable out after the 4th year of the deal. That's my ultimate prediction. I don't think there is any real thought in the front office to trade away a star RB and we have a GM at the helm who has a history of shelling out big contracts to RB's.

I think whether or not we regret signing him to that deal will completely hinge on the team we are able to build around him and the QB we have. In the purely hypothetical world, if we decide to make him a "core" player for the next 4-5 years, do they also do the same with DJ Moore? If we struggle to get a franchise QB again during that time period(something we did the last time we lost a long time starting QB), can you justify paying a top 10 WR salary with your top 5 RB salary?

I'm still in the place I was prior to any of the coaching hires, not feeling good about the offseason in general. There are just so many variables and right now the trend of the offseason(Thompson contract, Hurney being retained, Rhule/Baylor staff hires, core player departures, etc) is not making me feel any better.

My argument was for Foles and Mahomes. Mahomes, while good, isn’t as elite as he’s propped up to be. He’s carried by elite talent around him.

That's pretty much the dumbest Mahomes take I have ever seen. If you can't see his talent level and the fact that he is the core piece in that offense, I am not really sure you are even watching much NFL.

Agreed.  Good points.  I think that contract though could be upwards around 16-18/year though and I don't believe it would strap us down necessarily.  Meh, but yep I went from unease to excited and back to unease.

It's nice to have the young newcomer staff with the hot names but we don't seem to have a savvy NFL mind behind the personnel decisions.

Mahomes is an elite QB. Anything that suggests otherwise is asinine. If we’re going to say he’s only where he’s at due to the pieces around him, then we have to start questioning players like Manning who was surrounded by elite level talent on offense most of his career

If you wanna go this route, it should be understood as a purely theoretical discussion.

In reality there is zero indication, or even speculation for that matter, that the Panthers have given a single thought in this direction.

There has, however, been discussion of a possible extension.

So the exact situation as with Cam.

Yes. Because no RB would ever hold out because they are unhappy about their 2nd contracts? Ever.

I am not saying it wouldn't be prudent to hold out but CMC is actually the 14th highest RB contract in overall value in the NFL currently and he has the 8th highest guaranteed money in the NFL. He's actually going to have banked over $17 mil in career earnings just off that rookie contract.

I don’t think we should be getting rid of Cam or CMC.  We’re not as far from being competitive as most like to portray. At the very least we’re closer than the 49ers were a couple years ago.  And if Cam is healthy, we have a huge advantage compared to that team in having a legit QB.  Even if he never rushes for a single yard for the rest of his career, it’s better than what the 49ers went to the SB with.
