Yeah, it's just hard to see the justification for giving him a big extension. If you are rebuilding, why commit that kind of money to a position that is essentially devalued in the modern NFL?

If anything, play the franchise tag game for a little while and see if the rebuild is even going anywhere. At least you are only married to a big contract on a year-to-year basis.

Problem is, one of his biggest selling points is his 2.8M base salary for this year. Take that away, and next year it goes up 10M with the tag. Not near as valuable, and almost any team is hesitant to sign any RB long term. Much less give up draft capital to do it.

And if he stays, is every carry or reception one you would much rather have in 4-5 years. It’s a crappy situation for RBs, and Johnson and Gurley put GMs back on their heels. CMC is as good as it gets. But if the team wants maximum value, they have to make a decision now.

Could make the same argument for QBs. Despite how much they are demanding, recent history has proven you don’t need a Tom Brady or Brees to win a SB.

2020: Pat Mahomes - arguably the best QB in the NFL.

2019: Tom Brady - nuff said

2018: Nick Foles - Journeyman QB

2017: Tom Brady - nuff said

2016: Peyton Manning - At this point in the his career, arguably the worst QB in the NFL.

2015: Tom Brady - nuff said

2014: Russell Wilson - Elite QB

2013: Joe Flacco - Journeyman QB

2012: Eli Manning - The Best Mediocre QB in NFL history.

2011: Aaron Rodgers - Elite QB

2010: Drew Brees - Elite QB

Not really seeing the "recent history" of QB being devalued.

That is what is scary about all of this.

This franchise has been obsessed with linebackers and running backs. My fear is we lose Cam, sign cmc to a 100 mill contract and draft someone like Simmons in the first round. We are just going in a fuging circle.

Yep.  I don't know if an Anthony Barr or Rolando McClain type is an answer.  Would love that Derrick Brown kid.  He's a building block.

the panthers have cover to move on from cam because a not insignificant portion of the fan base has been geared up for it for years. tougher sell for a guy like mccaffrey, even when he is far less valuable. i expect the team to half ass this rebuild and spend the next decade trying to figure out why they can't find a quarterback. mccaffrey isn't getting traded (wouldn't be surprised if he played out his contract and went to denver though).

It is hard to argue with any of this based on the team's history.

Hopefully, the new leadership is more capable than what we've been accustom to in the past.

CMC is a double all pro in his third season. He is the best back in the league and is working hard as we speak to get better, stronger and improve his skills.  You don't trade all that for a first round draft pick that might be good down the road. He makes  any quarterback look great. And let's be real here, Brady was part of an offense that made Burrow go from someone who might get drafted in the first 4 rounds to the automatic number 1 pick.

I have no clue what the team is going to do but to think the only or even the best course is tanking and blowing it up is the sky is falling type logic

My argument was for Foles and Mahomes. Mahomes, while good, isn’t as elite as he’s propped up to be. He’s carried by elite talent around him.
