I thought, "Maybe that's the plan," and then saw your post.

Teams have sacrificed the short term for the long term before---tank! So it's not out of the question. I doubt it though. But Tepper seems like a shrewd son of a gun.

Exactly. JR tanked 2010 due to business reasons, because let’s face it he’d never do it to win, but it had the same desired effect. And look how it panned out. Can’t see any panther fan who cares about a consistently winning team in the long run not be open to it.

It will be a pivotal moment in the history of the franchise when you look back on it one day.  However it turns out will largely be the results of what transpires this off-season.

I agree it's going to be a pivital moment but even if this is worst case scenario time, there is still the hope that in 2 or 3 years Tepper could learn to be a better owner. If he likes Hurney for the same reason JR did, it's just another crap sandwich with a different condiment for us.

If we're gonna tank, we should just go full Pickles and play Will Grier.

This ^^^

Either try to keep Cam for a year, add some talent, hope he gets healthy, and try to win

or

Sigh someone like Bridgewater, add some talent and try to win.

or

Rebuild.  Play the guys we have, add some young talent and try to develop them.  Chase the QB the following year.

THE CHARGERS TRADE A SECOND-ROUND PICK TO THE PANTHERS FOR CAM NEWTON

With Philip Rivers entering free agency, the Chargers are left with Tyrod Taylor and Easton Stick on their depth chart. Adding Newton is a rare chance to acquire a 30-year-old former MVP in what could be the middle of his career, and the Chargers can install a roughly similar scheme for all three of their quarterbacks. Newton is signed through only the 2020 season.

THE PANTHERS SIGN KELECHI OSEMELE TO A ONE-YEAR DEAL

Osemele is a couple of years removed from his All-Pro form, and his brief stint with the Jets was a fiasco when the team tried to prevent him from undergoing shoulder surgery, but the 30-year-old should be ready for 2020. Osemele's run-blocking would make him a great fit at left guard for Matt Rhule in Carolina.

MARCUS MARIOTA SIGNS A TWO-YEAR, $18 MILLION DEAL WITH THE PANTHERS

With Carolina coach Matt Rhule looking for a quarterback who protects the football and offers some mobility if the Panthers want to use RPOs, he goes after a former Heisman Trophy winner in Mariota. This deal locks in Mariota as either a low-end starter or a high-end backup to compete with 2019 third-round pick Will Grier.

THE PANTHERS ADD BUD DUPREE ON A FOUR-YEAR, $64 MILLION PACT

Dupree was inconsistent for most of his time in Pittsburgh, but he matched his sack total from 2017 and 2018 combined by racking up 11.5 sacks in 2019. There's obvious risk in paying him, but the Panthers are thin on the edge after Brian Burns and can add a 26-year-old from owner David Tepper's former organization.

Other than signing Bud Dupree to a massive (for his production) deal...I don’t mind this at all.

Make Tristan Wirfs our first round pick and you have the makings of a team that can bounce back. Wirfs, Osemele, Paradis, Turner, and Moton would have the talent to be a game changing unit.

I wouldn’t necessarily consider it an investment for 2020 bc I think the goal should be to get in position for a top 5 pick (Fields or Lawrence). But if you put either one of those rookies behind that line with CMC it’s a good start in 2021.

I think Cam is worth more than a single 2nd round pick. Unfortunately, our handling of that situation has likely devalued him. But if you can get a pick this year and another next year that’d be solid.

Trade with LAC could go well for the long term if other pieces fall into place. CAM to LAC for 2nd rounder & swap of 6th & 7th picks. Trade 6th [Herbert] to Indy for their 1st & 2nd [#34]. Since most of the picks from the bottom half of the 1st and the 2nd are not ready to start until year 2 or 3 [not just a RR thing but for the most part league wide], Panthers could have at least 5 if not more 1st or 2nd round picks ready to roll in 2022. With CMC & DJ & others, along with reasonable salary cap space, dynasty time begins. IMO
